DATE: Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020
KICKOFF: 7:32 pm PT
SITE: Dignity Health Sports Park (27,000/Grass), Carson, CA

SDSU LEADS 19-10

UNLV at SDSU RECORD: 4-11

UNLV’s LARGEST WIN: 28 (31-3 in 2001) SDSU’s LARGEST WIN: 38 (52-14 in 2015)

UNLV has played SDSU more than any other original MW team (29 times)

UNLV (finally) opens its 53rd season of football by heading to play San Diego State in a game being staged in Carson, CA, which is approximately 110 miles north of the Aztecs’ campus, because the school is building a new home stadium

The Rebels won their last road game against the Aztecs in 2018

The Aztecs are 51-41-5 all-time in season openers

SDSU returns 16 starters (seven offense, eight defense and one kicker)

Aztec head coach Brady Hoke is 1-1 against the Rebels as his previous stop in San Diego saw the Rebels win 28-24 at home in 2009 and fall 48-14 one year later in California

Saturday marks the head coaching debut of Marcus Arroyo who was hired by UNLV in December after helping Oregon win the Pac-12 Championship (and then Rose Bowl) as offensive coordinator

UNLV’s previous 11 head coaches went 5-6 in their Rebel debuts

Only four previous UNLV coaches opened their tenures on the road: Wayne Nunnely lost at Washington State in 1986, John Robinson won at North Texas in 1999, Mike Sanford lost at New Mexico in 2005 and Tony Sanchez lost at Northern Illinois in 2015

San Diego State opens its 98thseason, 52nd at the Division I level

San Diego State has 10 consecutive winning season, which is the second-longest streak in program history and the longest since a 17- year stretch from 1961-77

This marks just the third time UNLV’s fi rst game is against a conference opponent (defeated San Jose State at home in the Big West in 1984 and lost at New Mexico in MW play in 2005)

The Rebels are 24-28 all-time in season lid-lifters, including 6-19 when they happen away from home

A Rebel victory would be its fi rst season-opening road win since downing Utah State 23-16 in 2007

UNLV has not returned a punt for a touchdown in 19 years -- believed to be the longest drought in the nation

When either sophomore Kenyon Oblad, senior Max Gilliam or sophomore TCU transfer Justin Rogers takes the fi rst snap Saturday, he will become the 12th different quarterback in 17 years to start a UNLV season opener

San Diego State is 48-15 in its last 63 overall games and 31-11 in its last 42 regular-season games against Mountain West opponents

San Diego State is 44-2 the last 46 times it has rushed for 200 yards

SDSU is 43-16-4 all-time in home openers

The San Diego State-UNLV series has been played every season since 1999. It is the longest active continuous serious for San Diego State with the teams meeting for the 22nd consecutive season this year

Since 2003, San Diego State has outscored UNLV, 134-54, in the first quarter of the last 17 games

UNLV overcame a 17-point deficit to win the 2009 game, the largest margin either team has overcome to win a game in the series

UNLV CAREER RUSH YARDS
1. 3,733 Tim Cornett 2010-13
2. 3,551 Lexington Thomas 2015-18

Interesting game as all new coaching both sides.

Aztecs O will be vastly different- D (supposedly) not so much (just hope they don't drop too far in efficiency)

Special Teams could be the difference as Lower Nevada typically plays us tough (in particular when they have nothing to lose) yet this is the first game so who knows...

Definitely excited to see the new O. Will we stretch the defense sideline to sideline? Will we have a deep ball threat? Will we have a passing game? Can we force a D to play us honestly? Can we still run block? Lots of questions to be answered.

Defensively, will the new DC still bring the heat as Rocky did?

I was listening to the radio on the way home and they were saying that Arroyo could possibly end up playing all 3 QBs (I don't think they were serious). But they were talking about your defense being hard to figure out at first, and since Oblad has seen it he might get the nod. Will he be the starting QB after that? They didn't seem to think that by the end of the season he would be, they seemed to think that Rogers would, and the players seem to have a lot of confidence in him. So, this game might end up being somewhat of a scrimmage, lol.

With that said, the rebs probably could/should have won the game last year, but for screw ups early, and then a FG going off the upright.. anyway, it'll be interesting to see what both teams look like, especially with half our starting line up out..

That's incredible.  Not like you'd expect to run one back every game or anything, but 19 YEARS?!!?

Carson State wins a scrimmage. Aztecs will finish the game with 2nd/3rd stringers.
