The Democrats of my grandfathers generation are FAR from the democrats these days.  The democrats base used to be flag waiving , patriotic ,  hard hat, working class, union types. Nowadays their base is coastal elites, and a patchwork of different minorities.

It's true that urban areas are typically Democratic, but labeling the Democratic base as coastal elites is too simplistic. The suburbs are turning their back on the GOP. There's also a big gender split right now. In the 2018 midterms, females overwhelmingly voted for the Democratic party. Polls show that is likely going to happen in 2020 as well.

It's not like the GOP hasn't changed either. They used to support free-trade and immigration. Trump publicly backs protectionism and a border wall.

Yeah it doesn't make sense for the dem party to be the party of coastal elites and continually win the popular vote... Some elite that covers most of the country..... It's just that the Dems have increased their tent while the Republicans have shrunken theirs.

Trump added states into play that Republicans haven't won since the 80's. How is that a shrunken tent?

Used to be that the only solid voting block of states was the old "dixie" south.......... from 1864 to 1972 most all the old confederacy states voted Dem then Rep - Only exceptions for a few of that group was 1976 & 1992 when Southerners Carter & Clinton were at the top of the ballot

Florida is changing as the old more R leaning folks are dying off........we are 40+ years past the Castro /Cuban / Communism history

AZ is changing more brown & younger, as is TX

Old enclaves of former Dem strongholds like OH & maybe some other upper rustbelt states could be the new swing states as they lose their old grip on manufacturing & unions

Minnesota is getting more Republican each cycle.

The Masters 5k road race All American.

You're right, the tent analogy doesn't work well here. Saying "a physically larger tent with fewer people" is too wordy.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

Bingo. In those days Dems all supported the working man (sorry for the retro-sexism). Today, you can be Jeff Bezos, the muthaphuckin richest man in the world, and actively fight unionization of your hundreds of thousands of blue collar workers in order to continue to have an income exceeding God's and yet still have Nancy Pelosi stop what she's doing and pick up the phone whenver you call. My revulsion for the Dems is exceeded only by my disgust for the Repubs.
