Criticism of Netflix "Cuties" is now right wing, QANON, racist, sexist BS?

I don't believe most view it as a Q conspiracy. The movie is receiving plenty of criticism, even in many left-wing circles. What some pundits are suggesting is that the emphasis is a dog whistle. Qanon believers were already going crazy about supposed pedophile rings. At an anti-mask rally in St. George, one of the protestors said that she hates masks because "child molesters" love them. Her views aren't isolated within Q circles.

If you’re concerned about it, why haven’t you mentioned it? You found the time to say something to me which is tame compared to rappers.

For the same reason that nobody posts every single thing that they may or may not be concerned about. I haven't seen you post about ocean pollution, so you obviously don't care about that. Where have your posts about sex tourism in Asia been? You must not have a problem with that. Where have your posts about the ongoing Darfur and Rohingya genocides been? They must not concern you either. What about our support of the Saudi side in the Yemeni Civil War? Congress passed a bill to end up participation in that, but Trump vetoed it. I didn't see you criticize him for it, so you must be okay with the Saudis killing 17k+ people in their bombing campaign.

I could go on, but I certainly hope that you get the point. I'm sure you'll post something that includes TDS, liar, and a few other ad hominems but doesn't actually address what I said.

What is the purpose of art? It can serve as moral instruction, pure entertainment or spectacle, but at its best, art holds up a mirror to the world and asks us to look at what we’ve made of it.

Consider “Cuties,” which has been described variously as a touching coming-of-age story and also kiddie porn unfit for decent society. It’s something in between: a movie intended to condemn the sexualization of children that tips over into doing the thing it deplores to its child stars. The people who are aghast at the very existence of “Cuties” should recognize that they aren’t its target audience. And the people who are praising “Cuties” should take a hard look in the mirror the film offers: You can’t lament the degradation of culture and its impact on children only when it’s convenient...

...Which is to say that I largely agree with Rod Dreher, who wrote that the movie “engages and demonstrates with great passion the very thing it purports to condemn.” What I disagree with are the people on social media and elsewhere who are condemning this movie as “kiddie porn” (it isn’t, as squicky as it is) or prurient for prurience’s sake.

Critics and commentators convinced this is nothing more than QAnon-inflected panic-mongering should get out of their bubble: Folks are right to be concerned about the sexualization of children even in the service of condemning such sexualization. Conservatives sitting there screaming “We don’t need to be shown that pop culture and pornography are bad, everyone knows it’s bad” should consider that they’re not the target audience: Some people do need a reminder.

But for this movie to work as critique, those who have championed “Cuties” need to ask what we have to do as a society to ensure our children don’t feel pressured to act this way. Did you, dear reader, celebrate the raunchy vulgarity of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” or dismiss criticism of it as fuddy-duddiness? Have you shrugged away the fact that Kim Kardashian made the leap from sex tape to mogul? Do you think it’s okay to celebrate little kids partaking in drag shows where grown-ups throw dollars bills at them?

Have you considered that you have helped create the world that “Cuties” is critiquing?

This article is pure moral panic. Hilarious.

I thought conservatives were off the "bad rap video makes kids bad" narrative but apparently they're bringing it back. That's a real winner.

I got a good laugh when the girl in your video was so dismissive of France...  “Fake language, fake country”.  😂

France is the United States of Europe.

Most in Europe are self-loathing, cynical, and insecure about their national identity. The French are the only ones who think they are special, exceptional, wonderful, and superior to everyone else

I know enough facts about it to know that my outrage is justified.  They expose the breasts of an 11 year old.  That is child porn.

Just curious if you discussed this film with your wife and her thoughts.  My wife’s first comment was an 11 year old doesn’t have breasts.

Interesting point.  Sent the review to my sister who had two daughters in dance but is also somewhat social conservative.  Really interested in her view on this topic.

New Netflix Movie Actually Murders Puppies To Teach That Murdering Puppies Is Bad | The Babylon Bee

Not on topic really, but John Wick is one of the best action franchises of this century.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

So I haven’t read all the thread but after some consideration I have some thoughts.

1) Pedophillia and the sexual exploitation of children is a big deal.   It’s especially an issue in Sac which sits at the intersection of two major interstate highways 5 and 80.   I have often donated to fight it.

2) like claims of racism and fascism over the top claims of Pedophillia do nothing to help improve the situation.

3) I see right leaning members of this board denounce “over the top” claims of racism and fascism all the time but then fill this board with claims Biden is a Pedophile, this film glorifies Pedophilia, the law in CA promotes Pedophilia, etc.   I would be curious why you all feel this situation is different when your statements have even less basis in fact?

Big difference between sexually exploited pre teens and bad words in a rap song.

I bet if this was directed by a white man instead of a female person of color who happens to also be an immigrant you would feel differently.  You would likely call it racist, xenophobic and problematic.

My wife listed off a number of movies where preteen and teen boys were explicitly talking sexual things about and simulating sexual experiences and asked me why that's not considered sexual exploitation but is just "Boys will be boys." I didn't have an answer.

I would ask anyone who thinks that this is hilarious whether or not they’d be OK with their 11 year old daughter doing this film.  I know I wouldn’t.

Well again having not seen it, it would be hard to say for sure.  Have you seen it or are you just exhibit A to my post above?

As mug said, no reason to see it. If some of the screen shots were posted on this board it would be an immediate ban.  We know what the content is.  We don't need to view it to have an opinion.

Yes, your use of the word Fascism on this site is ridiculous, no disagreement here.
