Anyone Here Cruise the Dark Web?

Recommended Posts

You better have the most kick ass Virus, malware protection, and you want to get at least 3 rubbers over your device. And don’t accidentally click a link to a pedophile site because the feds will bust your door down.

True story. My engineering group was getting some software training at a company, and at lunch break a couple of our drafters just stayed there for lunch and surfed the net. One of them apparently went dark webbing and accidentally hit a child porn site that the FBI was monitoring, and just as class started, the FBI came raiding in. LOL. That stuff ain’t no joke.

Sounds like a convert "real" story.

Could you link your friend's FB page so we could verify its true?

it's my understanding the dark web is tor'd so you need a tor client and access point.  i don't believe it's possible to just 'stumble' on to the dark web

You are indeed correct for the most part. That said, there are other "services" that act as the Dark Web other than TOR, it's just the most well known one.

The FBI raiding a place within minutes of supposedly accessing a child porn site is highly unbelievable. They would need to be both monitoring the particular website, the user would have had to be browsing unsafely, like with JS enabled or something, and they also would have likely need to have been monitoring the particular endpoint that they were using.

It's also unbelievable that one would just "stumble" upon one of those types of sites.

In short, I'm calling....

i suppose i'm using 'tor' the same way i use 'band-aid' or 'kleenex' or some other brand name (if you will) that was first to establish themselves in such a way that they are fixed in the lexicon as synonymous with the thing they do.  but i appreciate and agree with the distinction

Nope.  Never have, never will.  No desire to ever venture over there.

LOL, it was actually about 45 minutes to an hour. We were about 10 minutes from the Vegas FBI facility. This was Las Vegas, read the news, this happens. It was fairly long odds that the FBI happened to be monitoring the same ped site out of Vegas, but it happened. If you want to make a big wager worth the trouble, I'll email some friends that were there and they'll tell you it happened, and I'll get their permission to post their emails. How much? $1,000?  If you don't think you can accidently click on a wrong link on the dark web, then you don't know what you're talking about.

I'm always game for easy money, so if any of you other dorks want to make a large bet, let's do it. I'll even donate half of it to charity when I win.

It's hilarious the way some of you are so resistant to accepting the existence of new things that you aren't aware of if someone you don't like points them out to you. LOL, grow up.

For you kiddies that think the Dark Web is akin to believing in Santa Claus, here's some reality for you:

https://vpnoverview.com/privacy/anonymous-browsing/dark-web-websites-worth-visiting/

This is great, from the article:

"Watch out that you do not click on a link to something you do not want to see, because the Hidden Wiki doesn’t just index legal websites. In fact, there are many different “Hidden Wiki” sites out there. The Hidden Wiki used to be known for hosting, or at least, indexing a bunch of pedophile websites and has therefore been the subject of cyberattacks by the FBI and Anonymous.

Yeah, again, I'm calling liar liar pants on fire here.

I found child porn on one of my user's computers years ago. We fired him immediately, and said it was due to "inappropriate materials" on his computer. I immediately called the police, and it took weeks before they got involved. Then ended up shuffling it off to the FBI because they said it was their jurisdiction because it involved the internet. Meanwhile, I saved all of the logs from the computer and did a sector by sector image of the hard drive in question and put it into our vault. From start to finish, it took six months from the time I reported it until the time that the FBI even took evidence from us, and it was another three months before they actually arrested the guy. I ended up having to testify to all of that in federal court. The guy was convicted based on all of that plus the stuff that he had at his home, and was sent to prison for six years.

As a result of all of that, I started digging into the "dark web" and determining what I could do if my users tried to use it for nefarious purposes on my network. As a result, I know that you do actually have to go looking for those types of sites in order to gain access to them. I know this because I didn't see any of them in all of my looking around there, and I did extensive research on the subject.

I work in IT Security, and was a Blue Team lead for a number of years.

Then you absolutely are so smart that a $1,000 bet would be easy money for you. Let's do it.

By the way, "years ago" in the early days people that didn't have virus software or not good enough could get their computer hacked and pedophiles would load photos onto your computer without knowing it, and they would never have them in their possesion to avoid prosecution. There was a guy at IBM that took a loaner used laptop and it didn't have the newest virus software. He turned his laptop over to IT because it was running slow and they found the photos. He was fired, prosecuted, thrown in prison, lost his marriage, house, family, all his friends and family thought he was a pedophile. Finally a forensic team went through the computer and proved that it was hacked. He eventually got his conviction overturned, but his life was ruined. I hope your genius IT skills didn't ruin some poor chaps life with a hacked computer.
