Utah has furloughed the entire athletic department

Get used to it. There are going to be some schools (I'm looking at you SEC. I'm also looking at you Ticksass) for whom football is a religion worth dying for.

But the impact on both single-game cancelations and larger-scale shutdowns like this are going to make any resemblance of a "normal" season in any fall sport damn near impossible until we're past this shit.

Shouldn’t have cancelled football.  It’s not to late to change their mind.

I can see the argument for both playing and cancelling, though when I think it through I tend to trend towards the latter.

Out of curiosity, if you were AD for a Day, what (all) would you do if you found out on a Monday that 4-5 of the kids on your FB team tested positive and you have a game scheduled the following Saturday?

In that situation after you do contact tracing most of your team is in quarantine.

Too bad.  Cant wait until colleges are requiring athletes to get a poorly tested manufactured in china vaccine to participate.  This doesnt end well.  Just play.  Keep moving forward.

Exactly. So what happens to the next game (or two) on the sked? At least baseball has some flexibility basked into the cake over even a shortened 60-game schedule.

Idk how the NFL is going to pull off a whole season either, for that matter.

There is no argument for playing or canceling.  The season should have never been canceled. Allowing a medical redshirt for those scared or those with immunal compromised systems or medical complications is what should have been done.  Also allowing true freshman to play a whole season if to many players are medically redshirted with them retaining the option to redshirt later.

Testing positive is different from being sick and somewhere along pandemic we as a nation forgot that. The percentages don't add up and we just ruined lives over it.

But testing positive means you’re shedding virus. Our main problem is that we’ve never got the spread sufficiently under control.

There is no getting this under control, it’s too contagious. Until there is a successful vaccine and it has time to be widely circulated there won’t be NCAA sports like football or basketball.

Other countries have controlled it much better, but we aren’t collectively willing to do so.

You mean like Sweden. They had 5 deaths yesterday compared to our 1,000.

More like Norway with 260 deaths as opposed to Sweden’s 5800. Even without lockdowns Sweden’s population was much more compliant with government directives regarding distancing and social gathering than we have been.

There’s no reason to cancel the season.  It’s fear porn at its finest.

https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/story/news/2020/09/04/university-alabama-officials-defend-schools-covid-19-measures/5699500002/

The University of Alabama has around 2,000 coronavirus cases in their student population.  There are ZERO reports of hospitalizations.  Also, the evidence towards the infections being caught off campus.

In regards to the question you have, I would isolate the players who test positive as well as those who are symptomatic.  I would play the game, but only with asymptomatic players.  The CDC now says that asymptomatic people don’t need to be tested unless they’re high risk.

The bottom line is that the cost of shutting things down is substantially outweighing the benefit.
