Saliva Test a Game Changer?

Recommended Posts

The new test has been emergency authorized by the FDA. Spit into a sterilized container and results are available in a few hours. It’s relatively accurate and inexpensive also.

Football players could be tested every morning and available for afternoon practice or games. How quick it can be distributed is still in question. Lab availability is another concern.

Will it resurrect MWC football?

No, it’s simply an expedited method to test if players have Covid.

The only possible way to have a season is if college athletes live in individual bubbles on campus.  They’re not paid athletes, you cannot expect them to agree with that.

The NFL season could contradict the above, but again - college athletes are not paid professionals.

Saliva tests are garbage. They’re only useful for heavy viral shedders. Shedding is variable between individuals. Also, what kind of test is it? Based on your description of a, “few hours” I’m guessing it requires special  equipment and/or  trained staff.

If you're referring to the idea of an "NFL bubble", I don't see how that's possible. A bubble is a monumental task for 1 team, let alone 32 teams! The number of bodies needing to be in a NFL team bubble is what, conservatively about 80, including coaches and team staff support? I doubt that teh NFL will want to do this though, as they are more concerned with the bottom line... playing at home, and playing in front of their reduced, but cash paying team fans.

If nothing else, maybe regional bubbles might be an option if that's needed to allow play. Four, 8 team bubbles, preferably at a location that can provide at least two football playing locations (pro/college facilities). Regional bubbles are an idea that should be talked about imo... now, the issue for housing and isolating all those people... OY!

I’m referring to the possibility of the NFL season being successful sans bubble.

The nfl can pull off a season if players, coaches, and staff spend all their time either at home or at the facility. Nowhere else. This also means that their families are quarantined until the season is over. And everyone must comply. Fines and suspensions for those who step out of line. And no fans. The idea of even limited capacity at stadiums is ludicrous. You can spread people out all you want but entering the stadium, going to the bathroom, etc. is just asking for a superspreader event. Fans aren’t tested daily. Temp checks are for one symptom only. They need to stay home.

So, it will be difficult, not impossible, and certainly not any fun.

Can’t test your way out of this problem. This is a health and safety issue up against a money issue. Once players started making substantial demands that included  liability for Covid related heath injuries the die was cast. The real money issue became control of NCAA football money and avoiding lawsuits and the possibility of players organizing behind those lawsuits.

I disagree. If this test is readily available, accurate, and inexpensive it is certainly a game changer. Players can be tested in the morning and if cleared practice or play games in the afternoon. It minimizes the spread for athletes. It could also have positive ramifications for the general public.

The demands are a whole different issue.

Yep. Definitely not a safe environment for fans. Nothing like a good Covid proof Walmart or pot dispensary.

Maybe they could play the games in Targets.

If you can’t see the difference between a football stadium and a store that sells essential items idk what to tell you.

So, you want fb for your entertainment despite the health risks to all involved.

It's a shame many of the decision makers disagree with you

Not relevant.

Just because there have been no deaths to date,  does not give one a green light.

Because the process of training camps  is just starting there have not been that many cases. Yet.

All you impatient phuks need to take a chill pill. I agree that no fb sucks donkey ass. But, I am also willing to be patient and wait a year for this situation to sort itself out.

It's the proper and wise course. Just because you believe you can do something doesn't mean you should.

My daughter is a student trainer at BYU. Yesterday she experienced her first saliva test. She passed w flying colors!

About 20M kids aged 19-24.  About 10M of those are in college. About 10 die per week on average in that age group.

*almost all of these 15-24 deaths are above 19.

I don't have a lot of faith in it.  Football teams just have too many players/coaches/people.  Hopefully it can be minimized and contained to only a few but its a long season and going to be tough to do.
