OK, So 2020 College Sports are Done. Now What?

Recommended Posts

So what happens to the extra players that are scheduled to come to school when the outgoing players are still there? Do you up the scholarships to 100+ and once there how do you whittle away at than number?  25% more scholarships and the expense from them. That all translates to less PT and opportunities to showcase their individual skills. Do you just reduce recruiting and scholarships by 25% for 1 year.

It will always come back to money and in this instance the equivalent number of one year of college scholarships will be eliminated when it all shakes out. Maybe some of those millions should be allocated to this issue. College sports is a big money operation and millions are spent on making it a big time operation. Some of that money could be trimmed and spent elsewhere but a bunch of that money goes to support other students and programs as well as providing a higher education to many students involved in and outside of athletics. There will be many cuts in the coming year and life has never been fair but this mess will get worse before better but the conversation has been needing to happen for a long long time.

Today (July 31) during an 3-hour hearing in front of Congress on the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that it was a definitely a possibility the United States would have an effective vaccine against COVID-19 by early next year.

His optimism comes on the same day Operation Warp Speed, the US's COVID-19 vaccine program, announced its biggest agreement yet: $2.1 billion to Sanofi Pasteur to supply the US government with 100 million doses of its experimental coronavirus vaccine. Sanofi is working with GlaxoSmithKline on a vaccine clinical trial planned for September.

Fauci said he saw promising data on Moderna's vaccine, which began its phase 3 trials on Monday. Moderna's vaccine is also being funded in part by Operation Warp Speed, which has so far spent $8 billion on vaccine development.

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

High School sports in Nevada are moved to March.   Not sure about California or Utah.

Really dumb that they allow soccer practice, but not games.

This is really hurting kids.

I feel bad for kids that are sitting home alone all day due to this virus.

high school football in Utah starts this Thursday.  We have plenty of kids here, we can afford to lose a few :)

I think Utah and Idaho are full steam ahead, not even postponing anything.

So odd how the Virus is not as big of deal in Republican States, and is a extremely deadly and shuts everything down in Democrat States.

Kind of a joke how political this all is.

In the meantime, Hydroxy chloroquine is working for those who are taking it.

Well, like you, I am hoping for the best.   We really need it.

There are so many conflicting reports on this.  I'd say an extreme best case scenario would be January.

When will we have a coronavirus vaccine?

A vaccine would normally take years, if not decades, to develop. Researchers hope to achieve the same amount of work in only a few months.

Most experts think a vaccine is likely to become widely available by mid-2021, about 12-18 months after the new virus, known officially as Sars-CoV-2, first emerged.

That would be a huge scientific feat and there are no guarantees it will work.

Four coronaviruses already circulate in human beings. They cause common cold symptoms and we don't have vaccines for any of them.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/30/opinion/coronavirus-covid-vaccine.html

I saw an interview on PBS of two vaccine specialist one with the CDC and the other with the Cleveland Clinic. They said that a workable vaccine has NEVER been achieved and tested in less than 4 years and the average is just over 10 years. Of course some vaccines could be approved without proper testing in other countries. These may have no effect or less than a desirable effect. No one knows. However a vaccine by next year seems a pie in the sky situation.

I get a Flu Shot every year.  I'm a big believer in Flu Shots.

But I'm not aware of any COVID Vaccine being approved yet.   Some reports say it is 2 years off.

In 2009's H1N1 pandemic, GlaxoSmithKline's Pandemrix was rushed through trials and distributed in the UK (not used in the US though). Some who received the vaccine (including nurses and children) developed narcolepsy. The legal cases are still currently working through the courts in the UK today.

I support vaccines and have been getting annual flu shots for decades. But I will be cautious if I think a coronavirus vaccine has been rushed through the testing and approval process.

Yep. That's the common feeling among medical professionals as well: let someone else be the lab rat until people know the long term side effects of the vaccine.

There's a reason why the process normally takes so long.

We could put together a MWC bubble. Play in the outdoor Sam Boyd Stadium in September when the temp are still over 100*. Plenty of UV and heat to kill the virus. Put all players in one tower of Sam’s Town which is far away from the glitz of real Vegas. Play all games on Friday and Saturday. Cut costs by using Vegas Fun Books. Players will need extra protection though from the Boulder Highway hookers.

Great.  Where can we all get vaccinated?

You are trying to be funny and it is not working.  Obviously he was implying when a vaccine is found you should get one then.  I'm sure there will be numerous placed for you to get vaccinated.

I am not trying to be funny, so it makes sense it is not working.

Why are you lecturing me on getting a COVID vaccine, when obviously that isn't even an option right now.

To the question posed in the OP...what now for the board? We’re losing the thing that most tightly binds us all together.

expansion talk?

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.
