TicTok extortion.

Curious what you right wingers think about the TikTok situation?  @Bob @Nevada Convert @modestobulldog

Trump claims TicTok captures personal data from US users which could well be true.  He also is threatening to ban TikToc in the US forcing Bytedance into a fire sale of the US platform.  Now generally I’m not too sympathetic with Bytedance as I watched the Chinese do the same thing to HPE.

Here is the rub.

Trump said Monday that he will wait until Sept. 15 to take action on TikTok, giving Microsoft or another company time and opportunity to purchase it.

Without going into any detail, the president asserted, essentially, that the U.S. should get a cut for allowing the deal to happen.

“A very substantial portion of that price is going to have to come into the Treasury of the United States, because we’re making it possible for this deal to happen,” Trump said.

Never has the US Treasury gotten a cut for using political power to take assets from a foreign business.  This behavior is fascism at its core.   Typically we see this behavior among left wing authoritarian states like Venezuela.

At what point do you numbskulls recognize Trumpism=fascism?

From data perspective, what is the difference government getting data or corporations?

It is amazing what we have acquiesced to the last decade, that little demon smartphone.  The book of Revelations doesn't seem so far out there.

Intervention (a facade for plunder) is common practice, we do / have done it for oil (Iran, Libya, Venezuela).  Big tech is the new value chain.

Calm down. He's just talking without any sort of filter, as usual. This is why there are checks and balances built into the system.

LOL!  Another prime example of If Trump wants to shut down this Chinese company that is using their app to take peoples personal info and use it, then dammit, I'm for China!   Anything but Trump!   Trump is working with Microsoft so they can buy it in the first place.

This shows how Trump doesn't take this kind of sh!t that someone like Biden would bend over for.   Same thing with Huwaei and some other Chinese companies.  Trump is pushing them into the ground something that the Dems would certainly not do.

It won't happen. He's spit-balling on the fly, which is always a bad look for him, but it's not going to happen...so just simmer down.

be great if the Treasury did get a cut.  I don't see how it would though.  But you act like Trump is getting the money himself.  Yeah, its going to the Trump foundation!  Oh, no that was Hillary's game.

How is Tiktok using data/info differently than Facebook or Google?

CCP law that they hand over the data/info to the government.

Is this because it’s a Chinese company? Last time I was in China none of the “American” apps worked. Why not just ban it in the US?

It goes beyond that. It’s malware that doesn’t just take the info you put into it, it accesses the hardware of your device and can hijack all the data. And like halfman said, they give it to the commies.

Biden has banned it for his campaign.

India banned it last month.

Japan will probably be next.

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

Yes.  American apps do not work because of "the great firewall".  We view the world differently than China.  But, "banning" it in the US is exactly what Trump wants to do (for very good reason) unless an American company buys it.

Sounds like if somebody wants to watch 16 year old kids dance they will have to hop on a plan with Bill Clinton.

They're not....maybe.  But because they have a Chinese owner, now its a thing.  6 months ago, when they still had Chinese owners, not so much.  It probably still wouldnt be a thing if India hadnt banned a myriad of Chinese apps back in June, obstensibly for the same 'national security' issue, but more likely in retaliation for the recent Indian/Chinese border skirmishes which left the Indian populace in 'Boycott China' mode.

It gives me a headache just trying to think down to your level

Americans do not care about their online privacy. The market has decided that. Just inform Tik Tok users the CCP is using their data and let the market decide. FREEDOM amirite?

Why doesn't some other company just make a dumb app with videos and music and compete?

What's China going to do, sue for intellectual property infringement?

This is a no brainer move by Trump.  Not sure why people are up in arms here.
