Make Inheritance Illegal

Recommended Posts

To really have a capitalistic society, inheritance should be illegal.

Make inheritance illegal (and associated nepotistic practices and illicit end-around wealth transfers), and allow each rugged individual to make their own way in the free market. All wealth accumulated when you die goes to the state to build roads and shit. We can cut taxes that way.

Good or bad idea, my freedom-loving friends? ONLY in this way can the best and brightest rise to the top and fulfill the promise of a true meritocracy.

Sounds like you want the Government to address "Wealth Privilege".

OK.... But what about other unfair practices?  There are all kinds of ways that people get ahead in society, not based on merit.

What about people that get jobs / business opportunities based on family connections?  Not based on merit.

No.  You disincentivize greatness.  The reason capitalism works is because people have an interest to build something, to leave a legacy and to provide for their kids and gran-kids after they are gone.  You would be suppressing innovation.  To use a personal example, my cousin is a pharmacist.  She would be very comfortable without inheritance.  However her grandfather (not on my side) died and left the gran-kids several million each.  She used that to start her own pharmacy that just opened it's doors last month.  She took a risk that will ultimately benefit the community.  Or it may fail.  But that risk was made possible.

I worked in a pharmacy during college and for a few years after, and that is a tough business to get in to. I helped open a new Walgreens in a town that didn’t have one (or CVS), and within the first year they bought out a mom and pop pharmacy that had been open for decades. Also our biggest competitor when I was there was a different independent pharmacy, and I found out within a couple years of me leaving they had bought that pharmacy out as well. Best of luck to her though, hopefully she can carve out a niche and make it work.

Seems like a good chance to plug this.  For any of the 5,000,000,000 CSU fans in Denver.

Nah, everyone should accomplish everything on their own merit in a capitalist society. We need to fulfill the promise of Adam Smith's vision. We did away with landed aristocracy when we beat the British.

Landed aristocracy?  Hell let's get rid of this idea of "land"  Abolish private property!  Seize the farms from the farmers, if they don't play along, gulag em!  What is the worst that can happen if we take the farms and imprison the farmers?  A famine that kills 6.5 million Ukrainians  Americans?

No way should a farmer who works the land for 50 year inherit it when his dad dies!  Give it to the state!.

That's my question. If there's no inheritance what happens to the family farm once grandpa dies? The state seizes it, and sells it to build "roads and shit"? That's outrageous.

More likely the state would divvy up the proceeds for its favorite companies, or pet projects to buy constituents' votes. It would be riddled with corruption and waste, in other words a socialist paradise.

The idea of making inheritance illegal is absolutely stupid. However, something most of us could agree on would be cleaning up the tax code. Just spitballing, but what about eliminating capital gains treatment and deferred compensation preferences for executives and paper investors. Maybe we make capital gains preferential treatment only for original investors in assets. Why should somebody investing in stocks get preferential tax treatment? Why should CEOs and other executives have astoundingly low net tax rates just because they're compensation is mostly valued in options and deferred compensation scams. It makes a mockery of the progressive tax system. I would think redbullfan would be more successful drumming up support for those types of tax changes, and the hall to the federal treasury would be substantial without going communist.

No no no. I love private property. I just want everyone to earn it by being a better capitalist than others! Too bad if your dad worked it for 50 years, maybe you should've been a corporate lawyer instead of helping poor children so you could buy it back. Individual choice!

This is the opposite of communist. After a certain baseline, no one would get anything from anyone, whether its daddy government or your actual daddy. Everyone would have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, as is the American way.

That is completely unethical.  The money should go to the government to give welfare to kids like Jr and Ivonka so they don't have to turn tricks without the daddy connection.

Who would you rather have the inherited money? The government who we all know is wasteful and inefficient. Or, the son or daughter who will immediately blow the money thereby propping up the economy.

Bruh, Roads.....and.....shit.
