What MWC school has the best other major sports programs?

Recommended Posts

Just curious, how many NCAA tournament wins in the major sports (women’s basketball and softball, men’s basketball and baseball) does your school have in the last 20 years?

If it is just those, Fresno's baseball title takes the cake.  SDSU basketball accounts for two men's S16 and one women's S16.  Program wise, Boise, UNM and SDSU are typically the top conference programs according to Learfield Cup.

Our women’s teams all suck... except the swim team that had a handful of top 15 finishes in the NCAA championships a while ago.  So there’s that.

Baseball has not been played in the Olympics since 2008 and only 6 national teams (not the US) will play in Tokyo.  Mens Basketball is never grouped in with the Oly sports either.

So I take it Boise St has Zero?

Huh?  Baseball and Mens BB are not considered oly sports.  The other two mentioned, Boise Women's BB is far and away the best program in the conference, and softball is top third. If you want to talk MBB, Boise has been one of the better programs in the conference since we joined and will be a favorite to win it this year.  Better than Hawaii that is for sure.

When referring to college sports, seems like "Olympic Sports" is a catchall for non-football.

You might even just keep football separate.

I've heard that BYU is Independent in Football, and that its Olympic Sports are in the WCC.   Is that incorrect?

It's Olympic sports in the WCC, as is Mens basketball.  Oly sports is a catch all for non revenue sports.

That makes sense.  So everything, no including football or basketball.

Okay for Boise fans who seem to want to get technical on the term “oly sports” to avoid answering the question, I took out the word oly.

Well, if you take out the oly and we are talking just "sports program" that means we are including football and It is not longer a toss up between UNM, Boise and SDSU, it is Boise hands down.

Okay how many NCAA tournament wins does Boise st have? And before you get technical on me again, no bowls games are not considered tournament games. For the purpose of a definition of football tourney the only wins that count for football is the current D-1 play/offs.

okay Boise st is back to Zero wins now.

Come on now, if we are counting football, Boise has got to be number one.  A Fiesta bowl victory is like a Sweet 16 or Elite 8, probably more of an Elite 8.  If the playoffs are the only ones qualifying, then shouldn't it only be the Final Four that decides basketball victories?

Well, there are only a small handful of programs that have NCAA tournaments.  NCAA tournaments does not encompass Olympic sports, at all, far from it.   It really only includes softball, women's basketball and volleyball.  Softball, our program is towards the top of the conference, it is a new program so no tournament wins.  Women's BB, well there is zero doubt about who Mama is in the conference, back to back to back to back champs.  Volleyball, we put up a good fight against eventual national champs Stanford and are one of the best programs in the conference.

It seems like you are only interested in the "sports that matter" in the sports that do not really matter at all to T.V. partners.  The gap between football and mens basketball is huge, the gap between mens basketball and the entirety of every other sport combined is huge.  There is little difference, to T.V. partners in volleyball and mid distance running.

And the criteria is 20 years, so we have three Fiesta Bowl wins.  I would say a Fiesta Bowl appearances is like a sweet 16 and a win like an elite 8.

We all know how everyone has done in football. No denying Boise St is the king of the MWC in football. No one will deny that.

but what I’m interested in knowing  is how well everyone is doing in the other major sports that participate in NCAA tournaments to determine a champion.
