Luxor Las Vegas to be Demolished

Recommended Posts

...along with Excalibur. Apparently MGM Resorts has wanted to demo both in the last 5 years, but union contracts prevented it. They paid $375 mil in 1993 to build it, and put another $300 million into it in 2007. In today’s money that’s about a billion dollars. The cost to tear it down would also probably be another $200 mil at least.  How these people can just throw away something that nice is depressing. Imagine what kind of low income housing that could be if it could be moved to another city.

Ancient aliens.

As someone with two little kids, we went to Luxor and Excalibur two years ago and they don’t draw the crowds that they used to.  The family fun places growing up were those two and Treasure Island.

Ninth Island.  Hawaii people know.

Those places aren't that old, but they are in need of some serious maintenance. I'm guessing at this point it's probably cheaper to demo and rebuild

Yeah, I'm thinking a pyramid might be great for a tomb but not so efficient as a major hotel. Maintenance cost are probably significantly higher for the Luxor versus a more traditional building.

And the Excalibur was built when Vegas was pivoting to the ill fated "family fun" model. Let Disney be Disney. Las Vegas is for adult entertainment.

My fiancee and I stayed at Excalibur last summer for the NATA (National Athletic Training Association) Expo held at Mandalay Bay. You get what you pay for with the $30 per night room fee with outdated room features such as no mini fridge, microwave, or even a coffee maker. I could request a mini fridge for our room, but it was a whopping $40 a day!! That's more than the damn room. When we walked the casino floor everything just felt outdated like we were in a time capsule from the late 90's early 2000's. We quickly realized why we stopped going to Vegas because the hotels and venues are all about nickle and diming you rather than giving an accommodating experience.

I have stayed at the Luxor, it sucks. It needs to either be gutted or torn down given the value of the real estate it is sitting on.

Those aren't old buildings per LV standards.............their main issue is they are from the 1990's "themed casino" era & now casinos are moving away from themed designs - Monte Carlo was redone as Park MGM

Don't be surprised to see the Luxor & Excalibur both go away & be replaced with newer properties as both are themed & showing their ages on the exterior..............plus these two locations are prime spots near the Raiders stadium

Stayed at the Luxor 20 years ago or so.  Thought is was goofy and impractical. Not surprised it didn't age well.

I like the casinos in both but the rooms to stay there are not that great at all.   At the Luxor many years ago I remember I could hear every word people in the next room were saying.  blah.

Excalibur is terrible. Just the aesthetics of it.

Agree. Stayed there only once for the LV Bowl where Boise State pushed Utah’s shit in. That place was a dump 10 years ago.

That's another issue with older hotels..the rooms are dated & basically a Motel 6 type of room - they can't compete with the new hotel rooms & amenities

total remodels are usually more expensive than new builds.

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

Stayed there for a song 8-10 years ago. It came off as low budge as the California Club. Pillows on top of interior roofs, about as clean as a hobo's dirty Coke can filled with rotten COVID. And it was staffed with honey badgers - should have been renamed The Zero F*cks Hotel and Casino back then. Can't imagine it's gotten anything but worse in the decade since. The only good it's ever served is as a grail-shaped beacon coming up the 15.

Would rather gamble anywhere but Vegas.
