After 123 meetings, the last 90 years of which referred to as the Civil War.........

Oregon State and Oregon have agreed to drop the Civil War moniker from their annual football rivalry.

Despite the fact that civil war is a generic name for a war among citizens of the same country.  Apparently, Americans and perhaps more specifically Oregonians are incapable of comprehending that an annual sporting rivalry between student athletes is NOT the same as a war with actual armed soldiers and casualties that ended 155 years ago.  Sure, in the grand scheme of things it’s not a big deal to drop the rivalry game name but it’s sad that it is deemed necessary.

Make way for the Platypus Cup!

“Changing this name is overdue,” Ray said. “While not intended as reference to the actual Civil War, OSU sports competition should not provide any misconstrued reference to this divisive episode in American history. That we did not act before to change the name was a mistake.”

Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said former Ducks quarterback Dennis Dixon was at the forefront of requesting a change in the Civil War name.

“We must all recognize the power of words and symbolism associated with the Civil War,” Mullens said in a statement.

I mean honestly,  the use of the word 'war' in reference to this game is absurd. The correct word should be ' slaughter'.....

Well, both schools agreed to it, so I don't see the point in throwing a hissy fit about it.

That game had NOT A GODDAMN THING TO DO WITH GLORIFYING THE CONFEDERACY. Zero. This was a pussy move.

BFD.

Texas and OU, a slightly bigger rivalry, dropped 'Red River Shootout' 15 years ago.  Georgia/Florida game, dropped 'Worlds Largest Cocktail Party'.  Somehow, both rivalries survived.

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

It’s just a dumb dick move by these schools. As if “Civil War” is uniquely American or this game had any connection to the Confederacy or racism. It’s just getting stupid at this point. I’d venture to guess or assume most black people view this as a senseless gesture.

Changing of the name is being done because of a request from players on both teams?? Did I read that correctly?
