To appease the campus Democratic Socialists. How about Che for the mascot and change the name to the Socialist University of Nevada Las Vegas Guerrillas

What does a Communist Revolutionary have to do with Democratic Socialism?

Way to cherry pick your "real history,"  At one point you mascot was a Confederate Officer, that was named Beauregard after a confederate General & wore the Stars & Bars.  Y'all had the Stars & Bars on you helmet at one pt.  How is this not "real history."

You can try & sanitize it all you want, but you can't walk that shit back.  Sometimes you have to wipe the slate clean & start over again.

There’s no way around the imagery. Nevada and UNLV play for a cannon. The “battle for the cannon“ has also been called the civil war. One team is red, the other blue.

But remember Nevada was granted statehood because of the Comstock and the money it generated. The states motto is battle born. It’s hard to walk back all of that including the Rebel name.

I think it’s interesting that all of this isn’t being advanced by the black community in Vegas, but the Native American community. The Indian wars in Nevada were waged by soldiers? Wasn’t Kit Carson a soldier? If that’s the case, does the cannon survive?

And to be honest, if one community in Nevada should have a beef with the government, that’d be my pick.

Just UNLV Runnin' Rebels, no mascot.

We were just rebelling from the heathens in northern Nevada. :P

There's more to the story than that.  Y'all took it too far naming your mascot after a Confederate General & using the Stars 'n' Bars.  No matter how much you try and sanitize it, that history will always exist.

Vegas has been a rebel since the early 1900s.. we had GAMBLING, for crying out loud.

There is no better name for UNLV.

btw, we might want to talk about the revolutionary war, as well. There might have been a few rebels involved with that.

You "...might want to talk about the revolutionary war?"  However it's immaterial in this conversation, because y'all didn't chose to name your mascot after a Revolutionary War hero, or use a Revolutionary War flag.

You can't go back on some things.  No matter how much you try to sanitize it, that will always be your school's history.

He's also a retard, as it's Moctezuma. And if his family is locally from San Diego he is very likely NOT a son of either. As San Diego still has NEVER been home to the Aztecs.

#1 - Ppl still use the word "retard?"

#2 - You do realize someone's "family" goes beyond them & their mom & dad ¿Right?  My family hasn't resided in Ireland for four-generations or England for 14-generations, yet I'm still interested in my European heritage.  Why can't this guy?

#3 - WRONG:  Moctezuma, Montezuma & Motecuhzoma are all commonly used for a native language in central Méx & one of the last Aztec emperors.

Anytime you try to angolicise a language that never had a written form, you are going to come up with multiple ways to phonically spell their words.   What makes one more or less correct than the others?  It's an inexact science.

I can't tell you how many different ways I've seen the word Athabaskan/Athabascan/Athapaskan/Athapascan spelled.  It's the name of the Natives from the Interior of Alaska.  In the context of language, the term has a much broader geographic reach.

I'd like to see @TheBigAwesome come up to Anchorage in Oct for the AK Federation of Natives annual convention at tell the leader of the Tanana Chiefs he's spelling "Athabaskan" wrong.

We got a winner.  The UNLV Flamingos

Considering that over the years UNLV's football team has played with the ferocity of a bunch of Flamingos, that would make sense.

Change their uniform color from red to flamingo pink and it would be perfection!

The moron using the bastardized Anglo variant.

They're all either Anglo, Castellano or Nahuatl variants.  The Aztecs/los Aztecas/the Axtēcatl had no written language.  The term "Aztec" didn't exist until the the late-18th or early-19th Century.

¿How do you bastardize something that doesn't exist?

As soon as you use a noun to describe your team you have a mascot.  Just because there isn't a person running around in a costume, doesn't mean you don't have a mascot.

Can we agree that the university has done everything possible (over the years) to remove anything remotely attached to the Civil War?

I can see where someone who doesn’t know the history or reason for the name would find it offensive.

Most folks who live in the state of NV don’t have a problem with it.

You are correct. I can’t think of anything racist to say about our league partner, Colorado State Rams.

It may be PC, BS, but you guys haven't " cut all ties" until you dump the Rebel name.

If UNLV would have just adopted the Rebel name and not embraced confederate symbolism, you wouldn't have a problem.

You could just leave things alone and hope it just blows over; but it might not. You risk negative PR stemming from mini-protests and other BS.  And you know it's just a matter of time before those " REBELS" chants are met with, "RACISTS."

By removing the statue & mascot, the school has backed off the claim that 'Hey Reb' isn't racist.  The only thing left to tear down is the name.

It’s interesting. When UNLV fans remember the glory days they are criticized because it was THIRTY YEARS ago!

Yet those same critics aren’t afraid to jump back in their p.c. time machines to the 1960’s.

Being a Rebel now has a whole different meaning than it did years ago. Just ask Billy Idol and Tom Petty.
Yup, we’re all racists here in Southern Nevada and the Irish are all fighting in Indiana.

I can see where someone who doesn’t know the history or reason for the name would find it offensive.  I---> Assuming 2/3rd of the population of NV is up to speed, that would mean 99.4% of the US pop  "...doesn’t know the history or reason for the name."

Most folks who live in the state of NV don’t have a problem with it.  I---> ¿Do you have polling data to back this up, or are you now speaking for a majority of the population of NV?

You are correct. I can’t think of anything racist to say about our league partner, Colorado State Rams.    I---> ¡COOL...Thx!
