Spartan Stadium East Berm Is Coming Down

Are they just leaving one side empty? Or what's the plan?

Once the berm is removed they can begin building the Sports Complex, then the new East Side seating as part of that. There will be no seating on that side for at least the next two to three seasons.

Jesus. Billion dollar stadiums are built in less time than that.

Because they actually have the money for the construction. The reason for the tentative timeline is because SJSU doesn’t have the money. Their administration is projecting (more like praying) that they’ll have the money by then.

We need all the help we can get Al. Could you chip in to the berm removal effort?

From the SJSU website:

Quote

Prior to 2019 season – Removal of benches and bleachers on east side
Following 2019 season – The east side of the stadium infrastructure will be relocated and the rest of the east side of the stadium will be torn down
During the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons – The Spartan Athletics Center will be under construction
Prior to the 2023 season – The east side will be rebuilt with the return of bleachers, concession stands and amenities.

The previous capacity was 30,456.  After removing the East Side, the capacity last season was listed as 21,520. Looking at the watercolors - I'd expect it to be right around 30k again, maybe a little less.

So, instead of a grass berm on that side it will be flat grass on that side? Or just flat dirt?

Maybe they could put some little dirt hills and kids can bring their bikes and ride up and down the little hills during the game for fun?

Are they really projecting a 2-3 year build for seating and lack the funding? Not trying to scare SJSU alums here but this feels like a disaster in the making.

2023 is the projected date. Even if the money funded is 100% funded by donors and the fanbase from decades ago have gone, you cannot deny that this is the most ethical decision when it comes to funding an athletics department.

Lights and concrete walkways across the top have been removed. For the past week they've been hauling the berm away by the truckload...

Will the new stands be reconstructed before the new facility, after the new facility, or along with the new facility?

Sure I can.  Fund it, then tear it down, not tear it down then hope you can fund it.  Unless there's another reason they tore it down 1st....

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

He’s basically saying that the east side stands at Shartan Stadium were condemned by the city due to rotted out wood steps and warped aluminum bleachers. We’ve all seen the pics.
