OT: NHL considering a 24-team playoff to finish the 2019-20 season

Recommended Posts

The NHL is considering bringing teams together in a couple (one in the west and one in the east) centralized 'hub' city locations.  Las Vegas seems like an obvious fit for the west given the availability of hotels to house up to 12 teams as well as all the officials necessary to conduct a centralized playoff.  Since the season was cut short the NHL is considering to forgo the remaining regular season schedule, playing a handful of play in games and using an expanded playoff format of 24 teams.  The NHL is targeting late June to early July to resume play.  Fingers crossed this can happen!

The hub city idea continues to be discussed and it appears like the league will end up going with two locations. According Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston, Las Vegas and Columbus have emerged as favorites as they represent the two conferences.  Bettman said “probably eight of nine different places” that can handle “a dozen or so teams in one location” are being considered.

Just cancel the season, same for the nba, and maybe mlb.

Just a cash grab at this point, players want to get paid but don’t want to be trapped in a quarantine zone for a month.

Issue with the Vegas as a hub city for NHL is isnt the NBA also looking Vegas for the same thing?

It's no issue.  Vegas is an NHL town:rock:

If this happens we could enjoy the Stanley Cup playoffs and then roll right into college football season.  It's not perfect but I'd hate for the 69 games each team averaged playing for the 2019-20 season to end without someone hoisting the cup.

NHLPA board approves 24-team, return-to play-format

https://nhl.nbcsports.com/2020/05/22/nhlpa-board-approves-24-team-return-to-play-format/

Based on points percentage at the time of the March 12 NHL pause, the top four teams in each conference (Boston, Tampa, Washington, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Colorado, Vegas, Dallas) will receive a first-round bye. Round 1 will feature eight play-in matchups in a best-of-five series.

As the play-in round takes place, the eight conference leaders could potentially take part in a mini tournament that will determine the seeding for Round 2. Reseeding after the play-in round is another topic likely to be discussed.

Here’s what it might end up looking like:

EASTERN CONFERENCE

ROUND 1 BYES
• Bruins
• Lightning
• Capitals
• Flyers

PLAY-IN ROUND
(5) Penguins
vs.                              — Winner plays No. 4 seed
(12) Canadiens

(6) Hurricanes
vs.                              — Winner plays No. 3 seed
(11) Rangers

(7) Islanders
vs.                              — Winner plays No. 2 seed
(10) Panthers

(8) Maple Leafs
vs.                              — Winner plays No. 1 seed
(9) Blue Jackets

WESTERN CONFERENCE

ROUND 1 BYES
• Blues
• Avalanche
• Golden Knights
• Stars

PLAY-IN ROUND
(5) Oilers
vs.                                — Winner plays No. 4 seed
(12) Blackhawks

(6) Predators
vs.                                — Winner plays No. 3 seed
(11) Coyotes

(7) Canucks
vs.                                — Winner plays No. 2 seed
(10) Wild

(8) Flames
vs.                                — Winner plays No. 1 seed
(9) Jets

Games would be played without fans with teams based in hub cities potentially located in both the U.S. and Canada. Columbus, Las Vegas, and Edmonton are a few of the cities that have shown interested in playing host to playoff games.

I’m a little pissed at the NHL right now because they’re sitting on $1,000 I paid for tickets to a game that was scheduled to be played in early April. They’ve been dicking around with those fans with actual tickets to the games, still have those late regular season match ups listed as “postponed” and are not issuing refunds. They’re obviously not going to play those games at this point — so +++++ Bettman and the NHL teams for holding our ticket money without paying interest or granting refunds. +++++ them.

Oh Happy Day!

NHL teams have begun limited workouts with small groups at their team facilities, the start of Phase 2 of the Return to Play Plan.

The Deputy Commissioner said he expected all 24 teams in the Return to Play Plan to open prior to the transition to Phase 3, the start of training camps, which will not occur before July 10.

Man I wish it was cool/safe/allowed to attend. Playoff hockey every night live for a month in your own town would be pretty rad.
