Bye Buy Games?

Recommended Posts

We've already been discussing this but it seems more likely by the day.  If football schedules are to be contracted due to the coronavirus the first games to get cut by P5 schools will be games vs FCS and G5 opponents.  State and university budgets are getting tight and there will be little appetite for 'buy' games this coming season.

Nice alliterative title but the article considers the MAC and New Mexico State.

Dennis Dodd did a good breakdown of how the Pac 12 and Mountain West are both dealing with how (southern) california affects the rest of the West.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/pac-12-mountain-west-in-danger-of-being-left-behind-if-college-football-returns-to-play-in-2020/

"Let's go right to the Pac-12 with the states of Washington, Oregon and California supposedly [together in reopening]," Thompson told CBS Sports. "What if the two Arizona [teams], Utah and Colorado are good to go and those are other eight are not?"

Thompson would clearly LOVE to get both Arizona schools, Utah and Colorado and it would be fun for one year. If Hawaii doesn't cancel their season then, and only then, should a football only invite be issued to BYU imho.

9 + 5 would mean two divisions of seven; Arizona, ASU, UNLV, Nevada, Utah, BYU, Hawaii in the West and the SEC Mountain + Colorado.

The long term impact on recruiting if the California universities cancel sports is going to be HUGE even if it is for just one year.  It is now dubious whether a network will want to pay an amount that a 'power' media rights deal like the B1G of SEC gets for the Pac 12 media rights in 2024.

I can’t see how there will be football in the fall. Too much liability. Every kid would have to sign a waiver.

Then you might as well cancel the whole year athletically. No football $$$'s no athletic department.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

There is more liability in, you know-- actually playing football, than dying from coronavirus.

And you wear a face mask...15 yards, personal foul but you're protecting other players from getting the virus!

A waiver isn’t going to necessarily cover anything. There are plenty of things you can sign, but that doesn’t mean the court will deem it enforceable. What Trump and his staff are working on is liability protection for schools & businesses on C19 issues. It can’t mean 100% protection because if a school/employer made you work in un-safe conditions and you got sick because of it, there has to be some liability.

It’s the dickhead greedy lawyers that file frivolous lawsuits that are what schools/business owners need protection on, and it looks like they’ll get it soon.
