Oregon bans large gatherings through September

Epidemiologists are very clear in suggesting later timeframes if the US didn't value money more than lives and open up too soon.  Like in May.   It's likely to be next spring or whenever a vaccine is available at this rate.

Science deniers just wear you red hats in pride of your ignorance.  Don't hide it.  Or pretend you're smart.  Time will prove things.  If you read and not listen to Breitbart or Fox telling you it's #fakenews, then you'll know.

But then again, death to the old and sick is a superior choice to slowing down commerce or making companies adjust to a new norm.  Freedom!

Hysterics stay home, the rest of us can go live our lives. Problem solved.

We don't know what things will look like in 2 weeks?  By June/July, we will pass 100k deaths.  We know when winter rolls around, we will have to deal with both the seasonal flu and the pandemic at the same time.  We know from Fauci and pretty much any health expert that a vaccine won't be available in the next few months.  Classes are still going to be available online.  Why not let college students know now so they can plan ahead regarding campus closures in the fall.  College sports will be back, they just probably won't be for fall of 2020.

I mean our actions, collectively, change the projections; so we don’t know what the projections will look like in 2 weeks, let alone 3 months. I don’t see the need to have a blanket ban on large gatherings that far out when they can just as easily keep going month by month.

Also I think you have your threads confused. This is the post about Oregon banning large gatherings until September, not CSU moving to online only classes in the fall and potentially cancelling fall sports.

Yes, i was referring to CSU campus shutdowns.  My bad.  With respect to college sports in the fall,  the result is the same.  College football is looking less likely by the day.   I am still hoping college basketball can resume in the spring of 2021.  What a crazy year.

Absolutely nobody knows if a "second wave" is coming. It's a novel virus, which means it's new. How it behaves is pure speculation. But enjoy your fear porn

Pure speculation? I wouldn’t go that far. Covid19 may be new, but coronaviruses in general aren’t.

Any second wave will be orders of magnitude worse if we don't open the states in the summer. So if you fear a second wave, you should be advocating for opening the country back up, not the opposite

Not advocating for anything, just pointing out it’s silly to act like covid19 projections are just “pure speculation”.

This is making an assumption that opening up the economy and a second wave are mutually exclusive events. I don't think that's the case.

At any rate, as I have been saying over on the OT board. Open up the economy. Don't open it up. Whatever. We're screwed regardless. There are no good answers.

I specifically stated it's speculation to state there will be a second wave.

This is not the mindset of a healthy person.

You specifically said “Pure speculation”; different connotation, you know that. And as I said, coronaviruses aren’t new. No need to overstate things and pretend like this is some entirely new type of virus that came from Mars. That’s fear mongering.

No. It's the mindset of someone who is realistic. You can open up the economy, but people aren't going to be going to movie theaters, restaurants, traveling, etc. in large enough numbers to save the economy. And the people who do go out, will only increase the chances of a severe second wave, which will do even more damage to the economy. Of course, staying closed is untenable, too. And there are civil rights implications if the shut down continues. There are no good answers, and my attitude about that has been consistent.

In all this fight between how to react to the virus, and demonizing those who we disagree with, we are forgetting that the virus is the problem. Not politicians. Not people who are understandably nervous and want to stay home. And not those who want to open their businesses. And until the virus is eradicated, or at least treatable, most likely our economy is phucked. Just the reality of our situation.

What's better, the owner of a theater business making some money or no money? A restaurant owner making some money or no money? A barber making some money or no money. A nail salon making some money or no money. Guess we'd better just stay closed forever. Dumb.

If people are out it's going to make a hypothetical second wave worse? What are you talking about. Do you understand how herd immunity works?

Right on cue. Thanks for missing the point.

"all gave some, some gave all"

We’re just a bunch of commies here, apparently. Meanwhile, most counties are reopening Friday.
