UNLV hires Glenn Thomas

I thought you guys hired the running back coach from Oklahoma st as offensive coordinator?

That was Kasey Dunn, and we offered him the job but Okie St gave him a fat raise and named him OC to retain him.

Thomas is an awesome hire. Definitely worth the wait. Props to Arroyo for waiting for a guy with a resume like Thomas to come around instead of taking the low hanging fruit with the meh coordinators who have thrown their name in the ring over the last few months.

I don't see how a school like UNLV...or any MWC school could turn their nose up at a guy who was co-offensive coordinator for a P5 team that went 11-3 and finished the season in the Top-15 scoring 33 points per game. On paper, UNLV couldn't of asked for a more solid hire...With Thomas UNLV has the most expensive coaching staff in the MWC to go along with the most expensive stadium and practice facility.

Now there just needs to be a football season so UNLV can actually pay for it. The coaching staffs for basketball and football (and let's be real...the entire Athletic Department w/ how piss poor ticket revenue has been) was 100% subsidized by our multimedia rightsholder deal w/ Learfield IMG which was a flat $65 million for 10 years...DRF has been spending that sh*t like a spoiled teenager with daddy's credit card.....once that honeypot dries up UNLV is back to being broke again. (and due to corona the possibility of no future major events at the T&M Center like the NFR Rodeo to infuse UNLV with cash they will be totally boned)

It was the WR coach that Arroyo was targeting, but Rutgers was poaching the Oklahoma St staff at the same time UNLV was trying to, so there were raises and promotion opportunities.  In fact the first three coordinators that it was reported UNLV was in the hiring process with here given lucrative deals to instead stay with the programs they were at (DB coach Heyward at Oregon, WR coach Dunn at Oklahoma St, and DL coach Clements at Oklahoma ST).

Arroyo had hired former Fresno St QB coach Danny Langsdorf (who had also been an OC at Oregon St) to be the QB coach and "passing game coordinator" and for a while it was uncertain what role former Jacksonville head coach Ian Shields was going to play in the offense, and whether Arroyo was going to act as his own OC, and whether Lansgsdorf was going to have a role in play calling.... but that all blew up in early March when Colorado hired Langsdorf away.

At the time Langsdorf left, Ian Shields was still in his 4-5 week period that we now seem to have between when a coach is "hired" and when the hiring process is finalized and the "official announcement" is made, so it was still unknown/undecided what Shields' role would be.  Shields had been an OC for Army when they had a very successful run offense, then was HC for Jacksonville (in the same conference as Univ of San Diego) but Jacksonville dropped football at the end of the '19 season.  Ultimately Shields was named "defensive analyst" and will not be one of the 11 sideline coaches.  He is still getting a buyout from his HC job and this now just looks to be a transitional gig for him.

So in mid-March Glenn Thomas was "hired" as OC and QB coach and his 4-5 week hiring process began.  All that was new this week was that our dysfunctional Nevada hiring/onboarding process finally became "official".

I mean, Baylor's offense has been pretty bad the past few years but still...

¿Other than this general observation, has anything else surfaces as to why this guy wants to make a downward career move so late in the process?  No offense Southern NV, but given P5 -vs- MWC Cellar Dweller, my statement is accurate.

¿Anybody have access to his OC salary at Baylor -vs- his new pay in Viva?

¿Isn't it kind of odd that all the offensive position coaches were named well before the OC was hired.  Don't most OCs insist on being very hands-on during the selection of their position coaches?

OK Northern Colorado State.

The Baylor offense did well enough to get their head coach hired to the NFL to be head coach of the Carolina Panthers.  Thomas did not end up moving with him, so he had landed as an "analyst" spot (at I think Memphis) so being an OC is better than that.  Thomas had moved to a staff spot at Temple when he left the NFL, so he has shown that he would rather coach than sit out seasons.  The pieces are all in place for UNLV to have a strong season offensively, so that could set him up for his next job.

As discussed above, the staff was kind of rearranged when Colorado took UNLV's QB coach / pass game coordinator in early March.  Until then many believed that Arroyo was going to be his own OC and Langsdorf would assist.

We can't all be our State's Land Grant Institution:

Calif has Cal-Berkeley

Pennsylvania has Penn State

Colorado has Colorado State

Nevada has UN-R

I feel were you are coming from...

Thx for clearing things up.  I got the impression from comment made above, Thomas came directly from Baylor's staff.  I wasn't aware of the interim position Memphis in between Baylor & the move to Viva.  That makes a lot more sense now.  Lot's of late activity in the coaching world effecting our part of the country.

Arroyo running his own show also makes the tardiness of this selection less crucial.  I wasn't sure if he was an offensive or defensive guy at Oregon.

Wow.  UNLV is putting together a pretty impressive coaching staff.

Coaching is so huge in college football, too.

You guys aren't alone in this.  We had coaches recruiting before they were official.

Our DC Peter Hansen and Don Johnson Jr were both on campus and had UNLV on their profiles by late January and were being mentioned by recruits getting offers before signing day in early February.  Hansen wasn't announced as "official" until several weeks after signing day and Johnson Jr was hired away by Oregon by then.

This staff is step up and beyond anything we’ve see in years or maybe ever. This season will happen although probably with a few adjustments yet to be determined. Expect to see well almost anything with educators and politicians making the decisions.

If anything, UNLV will have a competitive advantage over most schools. They're used to playing in an empty stadium.
