52 citations issued in San Diego County

https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/public-safety/story/2020-04-06/san-diego-police-issue-16-citations-over-violations-of-stay-home-order

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Saturday the tickets were issued to 22 people who were “watching the sunset, having picnics near the beach” in Encinitas, located 25 miles north of San Diego,

The sheriff’s office tweeted that the state’s stay-at-home order means that “everyone is required to stay home except to get food, care for a relative or friend, get necessary health care, or go to an essential job.”

The violations carry fines up to $1,000 or six months in jail or both, the department said.

“This is a legally enforceable order issued under California law-Govt. Code section 8665,” the office said.

The reasoning man who rejects the superstitions of simpletons necessarily becomes their enemy; he must expect as much and be prepared to laugh at the consequences.

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

Which governor do you think will have the balls to be the first one to lift the stay at home ban and return to work? They are all going to look at each other like they did when the ban went into effect.

I think it will be telling as to who does and how affectively they make the transition back.  It will make or break a number of political careers.

That seems more like local law enforcement's fault than Newsom's fault. I guess you can argue Newsom should be telling local cop shops to cool it on the Gestapo tactics. In fact, I will argue that. But my town at least for now only has the sheriff kind of hemming and hawing and no one is really getting stopped or harassed for being in public without our papers yet. Seems to me it's as much about how locals are doing this as the governor's decree.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

Snitches no longer in ditches, they are rewarded.  Be a patriot, narc on your neighbor.

I think a lot of localities have those now. My county does... I'm guessing yours does too. Luckily, only a handful of law enforcement agencies in my county are as of right now enforcing by shuttering and patrolling parks and other public spaces. But people are being encouraged to narc on their neighbors for unamerican activities and breaking house arrests  not abiding by social distancing.

I'm curious why you are blaming Newson and not the overzealous San Diego County Sheriff who can't instruct his officers to use discretion?   You don't see CHP, which is a state agency, acting in this manner.

I hope Californians weren't planning to go fishing as things ease up to get back outside while maintaining isolation. Expect any fishery of any consequence to be closed well into the summer.

Because he hasn't intervened, scolded, or provided clarification.  He is closing parks himself.  The parking lot concern is overblown.  Granted the cars are parked close together, but not everyone comes and goes at the same time.

Several are now pointing out that senior citizens should now have their civil liberties infringed or experience discrimination due to coronavirus.

Human Rights Watch wrote a few days ago:

Quote

“Older people are disproportionately affected by COVID-19, and many governments are racing to respond,” said Bethany Brown, researcher on older people’s rights at Human Rights Watch. “But older people face risks to their rights as well if governments do not take their specific experiences into account and do not actively combat age discrimination.”

<snip>

In addition to the greater risk of severe illness and death from the virus, discriminatory attitudes and actions threaten older people’s rights. A United Kingdom newspaper opinion piece about the economic impact of the coronavirus said that the death of older people could actually be beneficial by “culling elderly dependents.” In a March 22 interview, Ukraine’s former health minister said people over 65 are already “corpses” and the government should focus its COVID-19 efforts on people “who are still alive.”

<snip>

“Governments should not respond to threats to older people’s health with threats to their rights,” Brown said. “We are all at risk if government responses to this epidemic reinforce ageist attitudes and ignore older people’s equal rights.”

Not to mention their rolled up windows provide a significant level of protection.

Don't take my word for it. I got it from Article 1 Section 1 of the California Constitution:

1 Read.

2 Break down defintions.

3 Demand remedy.
