Live Free or Die

Recommended Posts

I've held my tongue so far on a lot of the actions the government is taking in response to this COVID-19 crisis. Like most of you, I am frightened and saddened by what is happening to our people, that this invisible killer is taking precious lives and destroying things we as a nation hold dear. This invader has been on the offensive for months now, forcing us to react in ways we never thought we would. I myself have questioned some of my own philosophies throughout this pandemic, because we have entered a scenario that is unprecedented and we as a society were woefully unprepared for.

That all being said, I had almost a full afternoon to meditate and center myself. And a calm came over me as I remembered what makes myself as an individual and we as a country different from the masses. It simply comes down to liberty and the rule of law. It's the law which has kept our American experiment going for almost 232 years now. We are an imperfect nation, one that has dark moments that keep us grounded and honest about our frailty and the dangers of our depravity. But we are also a nation that is honest about who we are and the evils we've done. And now we are faced with an advisory that will force us to make decisions that will either preserve or erode the very liberties people had died for to establish and protect.

In the midst of this nightmare pandemic, I have decided that I will not support the government taking any of our civil rights away in order to "save lives." I will not support the government intruding on our privacy as an excuse to control the disease. I will not support the government policing our movement, our commerce, our speech, our property, our faith or rejection of. I will not submit to an authoritarian state that suspends habeas corpus or due process. If our government attempts to dilute or rearchitect the Constitution to react to this disease, the republic will have folded.

If given the choice of dying from COVID-19 or government tyranny, I would choose COVID-19 without hesitation. Freedom shines brighter than any virus. If you kill liberty to "treat" an illness, you will have gained nothing. There are some things worse than a pandemic. I will end by quoting New Hampshire's General John Stark:

Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.

Of course you would have this take. Commie.

So lets make govt bigger....and therefore it will be even more competent, accountable and efficient!

Free: Not subject to the legal constraint of another; unconstrained, having the power to follow the dictates his own free will.

Ranting on the internet wont make you free. You have to stop subjecting yourself to their legal constraint and contracts. Return any kind of govt ID. Stop using their SSN. Refuse their offers of "benefits", stand on your constitutional rights

I am cool with the government guidelines and people voluntarily abiding by them. I am not cool with coercion to enforce guidelines for our own good.

The thing that makes this trickier for me is that you could harm someone through a reckless disregard of the government guidelines, and thus should be held accountable. Your rights end where you start to infringe on others' rights.

Thoughtful post. I appreciate the time you spent in your consideration

The hard part is that it is not your life you would be risking for liberty.  You are healthy, strong.  You would be fine assuming you did not have an accident or need medical attention from something else.  It is the vulnerable.  The sick and elderly.  Our old doctors and nurses.

It is tough but as @thelawlorfaithful said, I do not think playing along for it during this pandemic means we are giving up our liberties necessarily in the future.  There will be a time to assemple and fight in our own way for our liberties and the constitutional rights that have protected us and make life worth living.  Societal buy in would be prefferable to any mandates from the state obviously.  I am very fearful of the precedent being set.  However I am willing to play along.  The human cost is too high for me.  Once we have a vaccine I will write my congresspersons daily and take any reasonable action to demand rights given/stripped be restored.

I respect your position.  The fear I have is should we allow the virus to run through the population it will create a panic and fear far greater than we are currently witnissing and the people will demand the same liberties be taken away and they will be harder to have them restored.

Then of course we have the human cost.  Hundreds of thousands to a million or more dead is a cost way to high for me.  Not if we can reduce it dramatically.

More than that... and @BSUTOP25 is not healthy and strong.  That is his belief or perhaps he is looking to win the troll contest who knows.   But my daughter is being pulled into a Covid team in Massachusetts.  As a parent, you worry about her health.  Medical people die doing their jobs.

Hopefully, things are not so black and White.  I pray we can get through this disease so many don’t have to die while not permanently surrendering our civil liberties.  It’s up to us as a people to decide.

As much as I dislike the government restricting our rights, the fact is if we all ignored the current government limitations the virus would expose significantly more people and we would in effect be sentencing many older and compromised individuals to an early death.

This is a once in a lifetime situation and I’m willing to temporarily sacrifice my freedom to minimize the impact on others. As much as it sucks we are in a no win situation. Assert your freedoms and more will die. Temporarily give up your freedoms and more will live. I choose the latter.

Mature response.  When you hold extreme and unbending ideological positions, reality has a tendency to slap you in the face if pragmatic solutions don't fit neatly into your black and white worldview.

I would argue that right now WE need to be thinking about the overall community and we should not be putting our selfish needs to galivant above the life or death of others.  This is a matter of ethics and we shoukdnt NEED government to help enforce this...but selfishness knows no bounds sometimes.

I would argue right now we NEED a competent, coordinated, and professional government response.  Instead we have incompetence.  I really hope the next katrina or pandemic happens when we have a competent admin.

To be clear, I’m specifically talking about suspension of human and civil rights by the government. I am personally isolating as much as possible while respecting the six foot social distancing rule and will wear a mask and gloves whenever I go out into pubic — not just for my welfare but for that of others, in case I am a carrier without knowing it. But when certain states like Rhode Island are monitoring movement and going door to door looking for out of staters, I’ve got issues with that. Some of you will disagree and say how stupid and selfish I am but I don’t care — I will still support your civil rights to express how stupid and selfish I am.

If that makes you feel better somehow then cool. But slacktivism is a dead end as far as RL goes.

ABC123 PD bangs on someone's door: "Open up, or else!"

The reply shd be:

A BSUTOP25 says he supports my Rights so eff off

B Is there is a warrant issued for this specific address?

ABC123 PD thug makes you an offer to accept his authority so he can write you a ticket or arrest you for disobeying their directive

A Accept the offer by volunteering evidence against yourself, like name, ID, etc...

B Decline the offer and volunteer nothing, ask if you're being detained. If you're being detained, then what crime is alleged to have been committed?

I support your Civil Liberties. I support your right to freedom of movement and speech. You have the absolute right to contract the Corona virus and spread it to others.  But, did you respect the rights of others when you made that boneheaded decision ?

What those who are screaming about their Constitutional Rights forget is that those Rights also come with responsibility.
