Marvin Menzies named interim coach

Recommended Posts

Pretty socked Thunder Dan got fired. I thought he'd be set for life there.

Why would he? He never saw the court when Marvin was coach.

I could see Diong wandering that way, though..

Agreed about Diong. He doesn't really fit TJO's system and will likely see less and less playing time. Marv would make him the focal point.

You think Diong would be the focal point lol hmm interesting.

Yeah I'm kinda shocked but it's been hinted to since last season. I wonder if it's health. Some speculated he may take a position with the Sun's.

GCU is a sleeping giant though they have something special.

He might get it; it's a mid-tier WAC school, which is a perfect level for him.

I doubt it. Doesn’t have a great track record as HC, his successors do a better job than him. That and he’s a scumbag.

That’s why Dan should have left GCU when he could have. GCU? Seriously?

Thunder Dan took the job to fill some hours in retirement, earn a little extra cash and not have to leave home and his other business ventures.  I can't see him pursuing another college gig.  He may re-surface with the Suns

There's a Marv - Pitino connection too.  He may not take the gig unless Marv gives him the okay

Someone again please explain why Marvin Menzies is a bad coach?

He was solid at NM State.   And he was improving UNLV every single year.  His first year at UNLV, he basically inherited 3 players, and had to construct an entirely new team.

One of the major gripes alot of people have is the statement he made on racial slurs he said he got when he took the job at UNLV. This was in response about his job security when asked if he's worried about being replaced.  Never ever call a racist a racist, ever it's the worst thing you can call them in today's time. But seriously alot of people don't respect that and it pervades their logical thinking.

Yes he did. I brought up numerous times how MM was playing walkons over scholarship guys.

I still doubt he leaves, but I know the angle on this one.

He wasnt a bad coach. He and Otzelberger are both above average coaches.

Not only did MM inherit 3 guys, he took the program over very late in the process/year and after years of underachieving. The problem with Marv is that hever really over or underachieved. Marv truly was mediocre. He also failed to sell himself, but the coaching and buy in from his guys was obvious.

Definitely not a bad coach. Just lames with agendas.

Nothing like auditioning for the GCU job.

I hope they hire Pitino, give him $5M a year and then he gets them on NCAA probation.

Boom goes the dynamite.

I agree he didn't overachieve, but not many guys could have performed any better with the situation he was handed when he was hired at UNLV.

There is some pitino talk

How old is Patino now?  He must be 70 at least. I know this is a joke but would they even think of the guy?

Patino is coaching in Europe somewhere.

Jimmer is on his team.

Worst 3 years in UNLV history and his last year wasn’t an improvement. Strength of schedule was the worst UNLV has ever had, number of blowouts against the likes of Air Force and Bucknell. When people actually look at the numbers from the season and who we played, it was an atrocious season.

On top of that player development sucked, recruiting was terrible, way too many projects and players that only picked up a basketball a couple years prior. When job was in question, he deflected his failures to racial epithets hurled at him since day one, that he never could prove. Happened right around the same time the Jussie Smollet hoax was being investigated. Just an all around loser and UNLV rightfully got rid of him.

It’s not just UNLV fans either, New Mexico State fans don’t miss the guy. Weir and Jans did a much better job.

His last year was absolutely an improvement (I'm talking about in the MWC play).  UNLV finished 4th in the MWC his last year.

Again....the guy was handed like 3-4 players when he got handed the program!  And late in the year (after the other guy ran off to Texas Tech).  Menzies was essentially starting from scratch.

"Way too many projects".   Wonder why?   (3-4 players is all he got to start with).

He resume speaks for itself.  While he might not be an amazing or elite coach, he is certainly a good coach.  And he improved every year while at UNLV.

I don't know about the racism charges or if UNLV fans called him racist words (I doubt that).

I was listening to Cofield on the way home a little while ago, and Adam Hill was talking about the list of coaches that have already expressed interest in the job. At the top of the list was Pitino. He said Pitino might even work for just a couple mill, with the contract that his kid would be the coach in waiting. GCU would pay it in a heartbeat, and wouldn't even care if he cheated to get them deep into the tournament, lol. Probation? worth it to get the recognition. :D

Yes, I think he probably got about 20 minutes of playing time, lol. However, even then I would have liked to have seen him on the court more than he was.
