Chicago St Cancelling Games Due To Coronavirus

Recommended Posts

Yesterday on the ESPN show Around The Horn they said the NCAA is considering holding the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments in arenas without fans (if need be) because of the coronavirus. This is a "just in case" scenario and hopefully it won't come to that. They also mentioned that there were pro soccer games in Italy that were played in empty stadiums recently because of the virus.

Chicago State has an enrollment of 2,000 undergrads, and they are a public University.

Why do they even have a sports program at this level?  They need to shut it down.

The men’s and women’s team have won a combined 5 games all year.  I don’t think the decision had much to do with coronavirus.

Their season was already over. Cost cutting.

If they skip out on the WAC tournament and everyone else goes, you'd have to think the WAC would kick them out if the WAC has the necessary membership without them.

Yeah, they need to cut them.  They are a geographic outlier, and a bankrupt school.  This would be a great reason to get rid of them.

That's not how conferences work.  That's like the endless threads over the years about kicking out SJSU.  They aren't going anywhere.  Chicago State might leave on their own.  Tiny school with limited funds and unable to field competitive teams.  But they aren't being kicked out.  It's a numbers game, and every conference has a horrible program or two.  And frankly there just aren't a whole lot of viable schools out west to replace them with.

The WAC has the necessary membership with Tarleton State and Dixie State joining.  But dropping Chicago State would reduce its membership back to 8.  Not a good idea.

It's a grifting operation, like most things in Chicagoland.

Temple was kicked out of the Big East for lack institutional of support back in the day.  Times are beginning to change and schools will need to be more proactive to stay in conferences in my opinion.  If the WAC had better options, they might nudge Chicago St out.

I don't think they really need to find another school.

They already are pretty good at this (who would leave?):

1--Cal Baptist

2--Grand Canyon

3--Utah Valley U

4--Dixie State

5--New Mexico State

6--Seatte U

7--UT Rio Grand Valley

8---Tarleton State

They can now afford to dump Chicago State, who is bankrupt, and who is a midwest outlier.   8 schools is fine.   And all 8 have decent venues.

Future targets could be in California or Texas, I assume.

Temple was also a football-only member.  Much more difficult to boot a full member.  That said, there are legitimate reasons for the WAC to expel Chicago State if it ever does so.

Exactly.  The business of college sports is more cutthroat now than ever before.  I would think the WAC institutions are tired of having a member who is an outlier, financially broke, and a school having enrollment issues as well as threats of being shut down just a few years ago.

The fact they're broke and have terrible teams probably has more to do with the cancellations than does the potential of student athletes contracting the latest flavor of the month outbreak.

Total Lols re this topic read earlier this morning in sports news .  Chicago State hardly qualifies as the 'first major athletics team' to ditch an event due to the carno virus ho hum mayhem.  it is costly to travel from Chicago to Seattle.  Plus their teams suck at performance, substantially.  It's a budget decision. Nothing to see here folks other than a squad that needs to exit Division 1 sports basketball.
