Damn we were looking at a legit shot at winning the MWC Tourney and to have that robbed running up the score against the biggest waste of space in this conference 🤬🤬

I'm not sure if the Rebs have been running out of gas late in the last several games, or just letting up on the gas pedal, but the trend over the last 6 games has been:

Fresno St: Bulldogs led first 16 minutes, by as much as 11 (tight game final 24 minutes, UNLV won by 1)
Nevada: Largest UNLV lead was 6 (went to OT and lost by 3)
UNM: tight game, UNLV took a lead with 6 minutes left and held it for 5-point win
CSU: Led by 35 with 7 minutes left (held on to win by 24)
SDSU: Maintained a 9-12 point lead from mid 1st half until final 5 minutes (won by only 3)
Boise St: Led by 27 with 10:53 left (won by only 10)

Ive pretty much been talking about the 2nd halves all season. Its really only a thing if they start dropping games as a result of it like they were to start the season. But theyve been closing games. I dont think theyd close consistently vs better teams.

I think its due to lack of quality depth of guards. Typically the amount of guards currently on roster is plenty, but with so much time spent with 3 & 4 guard line ups, you wear those guys out quick. They clearly are not running the same stuff with the same crispness when theres about 5 min remaining.

A shot? Yes. But a long shot probably.

EML is slightly better than I gave him credit for. He effects winning, but he seems injury prone.

Well, at least the women's team isn't the biggest waste of space in this conference.

Totz came in with hype around his offense, but his defensive scheming has been the star this season. The team has played a very nuanced style of defense, running a lot of midfield, man/zone type schemes where Shibel just hovers in an area when teams are running screen game or dribble hand offs. It really mucks up the middle and keeps your big not engaged and free to rebound. I like it.

They'll be alright as long as they get their east buckets.

True. True. But eml, hardy and bham are bucket getters and make tough shots. Plus, he hits outside shots. With one less threat im thinking lane gets clogged so less easy ones..

With or without eml I think Rebs win one, drop one.

He's good working with a team that closed out their last season strong. You can tell they where really starting to gel towards the end of last season. So many close losses at the end they finally turned that corner. If you pay attention to the story with out people's narratives or opinions it's obvious to see that....

Ding, ding, ding!!!

The team also would have added Juice back. Plus JPL and Ethan at minimum. I think two more players would have been added because i think Ntambwe leaves anyway.

UNLV would have had 2nd best scorer - bham, best shot blocker-mbacke, best rebounder - Juice, and best pg - Ethan... in the entire league. And if Ntambwe did stay, thats a ranked team that competes vs suds to win the mwc the same way usu beat reno out the year before.

Im just happy TJO turned it over quickly so maybe next season UNLV is back in the rankings where it belongs.

We will see.

Ethan Anderson being the best PG in conference is laughable. He wouldnt even be the best freshman PG in conference.

"Make like a tree and scram" - Rosegreen

Your administration is the reason why our basketball league is bleeding out currently. If you didn't insist on San Jose being in the MWC, so you guys would have someone that votes similar to SDSU, every team in the MWC wouldn't have to play 2 games vs. a team with a 330 RPI ranking EVERY season.

You guys are as stupid as you are desperate.   - Cowboy Junky

That was certainly a ridiculous observation but anything to prop up their coach, to prove their "point."

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - Four Runnin' Rebels scored in double figures as the UNLV men's basketball team defeated San Jose State, 92-69, in its regular-season finale at The Event Center Saturday afternoon.

The win was UNLV's fifth straight and sixth in its last seven games. It was also the Runnin' Rebels' 12th Mountain West win, giving them their most conference victories in 12 years. The 2007-08 squad went 12-4 during conference play.

Senior guard Elijah Mitrou-Long scored a team-high 20 points for UNLV (17-14, 12-6) before leaving the game late with an injury. Junior forward Mbacke Diong recorded his fifth double-double of the year with a career-high tying 19 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Bryce Hamilton added 18 points, and junior guard Amauri Hardy contributed 17.

The Spartans (7-23, 3-15) were led by Seneca Knight's 20 points and eight rebounds.

STATS OF THE GAME: UNLV shot 57.1 percent (16 of 28) in the first half and made 11 3-pointers during the game, finishing one shy of its season high.

STRETCHING THE LEAD: UNLV led 44-35 at halftime and over about a 12 minutes stretch in the second half, doubled up SJSU 28-14 to take a 20-point lead with 7:30 to go.

20-POINT AVERAGE: With a scoring average of 20.9 ppg in conference play, Hamilton became the first Runnin' Rebel to score at least 20 points per game in MW play since the 2009-10 season (Tre'Von Willis, 20.3 ppg).

QUOTABLE: "We challenged our guys. That is a tough environment to play in because you have to generate your own energy. I am proud of our guys how they came out with a focus early in the game. In the second half, we were really able to separate because our defensive energy was good. To hold them under 40 percent from the field on their court speaks to the continued improvement of our defense and that led to our offensive transition." - UNLV head coach T.J. Otzelberger

NOTES:
- It was UNLV's third straight road win after starting the year 2-8 away from home.
- It was UNLV's third game this season scoring over 90 points.
- It was UNLV's sixth straight win over San Jose State.
- This was only the second time UNLV has ever played on "Leap Day" - Feb. 29. The previous time was in 2012 at Colorado State.
- Hamilton, Hardy and Mitrou-Long combined to shoot 21 of 42 from the field (50 percent).
- Hardy dished out eight assists, while Mitrou-Long had six.
- The Runnin' Rebels finished the game shooting 55.7 percent from the field, improving to 10-0 on the season when making at least half of their shots.
- UNLV made 50 percent of its 3-point tries (11 of 22).
- UNLV held SJSU to 39.6 percent from the field (21 of 53).
- UNLV outrebounded SJSU 41-28, marking the 22nd time this season it has recorded more rebounds than its opponent in a game.
- UNLV led in points in the paint, 44-14.
- UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,101 straight games.

NEXT FOR THE RUNNIN' REBELS: UNLV will open Mountain West Tournament play in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 5. The Runnin' Rebels will play Boise State at 2 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center

Looks like Menzies will probably be looking for work again soon. Glad we moved on from that mistake.

There is a good thread up on Rebel Net about how Mediocre Marv's team last year played 18 games vs. teams ranked 200 or lower, yet still managed to only win 17 games all season with a schedule ranked 157 in the country (which somehow actually improved with the weak MWC conference schedule).

Classic example of not challenging the players and striving for mediocrity.

I was one of the dreamers who thought we could land Matta, and was a bit disappointed initially that we had to "settle" for TJ.  However he's crushed it this year, turning a team of players conditioned to strive for mediocrity into a hard working team that actually improves as the season goes on.  It's amazing what good coaching can do, and the difference is clear as day.

By all accounts the MW is also better this year than it was last year, yet we still finished with a better record.  One big difference is that while Mediocre Marv took care of all the games he should have won vs. the weaklings of the conference, he very rarely beat any teams ranked higher.  TJ's squad nearly swept a top 10 SDSU team and took down Utah St at home.  If only we had beaten Reno at home like we should have, instead lost in OT.  Otherwise would have finished alone in 2nd place this year.  Phenomenal first year job by COACH TJ!

It's absolutely amazing Dave Rice's all-stars could never manage to win 12 games in the MWC.  UNLV has a long history of underachieving in conference play, looks like that's finally starting to turn around under TJ.  Really looking forward to the MW tourney this year... I actually feel we have a chance to make noise!
