TJO needs one more win to tie Roland Todd for 9th most wins at UNLV

The 2019-20 season marks the 62nd year of Runnin’ Rebel basketball at UNLV. Since the program’s inception in 1958-59, the Runnin’ Rebels have posted an all-time record of 1,304-581 (.692)

The first meeting between the two schools occurred in 1983

UNLV leads the all-time 40-6

UNLV has won five straight over the Spartans and 12 of the last 14

UNLV is 16-4 all-time at SJSU and has won two straight at the Events Center

SJSU is 6-9 at home this season

The Spartans have lost eight straight games, but have recorded wins this year against New Mexico and UNR, and lost at San Diego State by two points on a last-second shot

SJSU is coming off two straight road games: at Colorado State (78-71) last Saturday and at Utah State (94-56) on Tuesday

Sophomore guard Bryce Hamilton and Hardy lead the Runnin’ Rebels in scoring, averaging 15.7 and 14.5 points per game, respectively. Hamilton has recorded double-doubles two of his last three games and has a 17-game streak of scoring at least 10 points

UNLV junior guard Amauri Hardy collected his 1,000th-career point on Wednesday vs. Boise State. With his 24 against the Broncos, he now has 1,004 over his three years as a Runnin’ Rebel. Hardy is the 39th player in program history to tally at least 1,000 points in a career

UNLV has now won two straight road games after going 2-8 in its first 10 contests away from home. These two road wins were at The Pit vs. New Mexico on Feb. 15 and at then-No. 4 San Diego State on Saturday. UNLV is looking for its third straight win on the road Saturday at San Jose State

UNLV currently has a four-game win streak and is looking to extend that to a season-high five games

During UNLV’s current four-game win streak, senior guard Elijah Mitrou-Long has been a major catalyst, averaging 17.0 ppg, tying for second on the team during that span

UNLV has outrebounded its opponent in 21 of its 30 games this season. UNLV is 13-8 in those contests and ranks 12th in the country in total rebounds (1,172), 18th in rebound margin (+6.7), 25th in offensive rebounds per game (12.4) and 39th in total rebounds per game (39.1).

UNLV holds the NCAA record for most consecutive games scoring at least one 3-pointer. Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 1,100 games played

In his last six games Nick Blair has scored 0-5-0-5-0-5 points

Hamilton needs 29 points to reach 500 for the season

Small ball is tough to stop with this group.

Coleman, Mitrou-Long, Hardy and Hamilton all using movement on the perimeter to get some space and then one of them attacks that space. I'd say zoning UNLV might help, but it seems like they already know what to do in those cases. Boise did it a few times and one screen up top while the ball switches sides and the lane is even more open. With Blair, Shibel and even Jay Green now you can throw in a role player that can switch all positions on defense and are above average rebounders.

Rebs keep finish the season strong and have a convincing win over SJSU. 81-66

All is well, For Rice is gone.

Donnie Tillman is close to a return.  We started getting a lot better once he got injured.  I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

I'd be curious how Tilman would do as a small ball 5 tbh.

My understanding of the seeding possibilities for UNLV is that if Rebels beat SJSU...

  • ... for UNLV to move up to #3 seed Utah St must lose to New Mexico and the Wolf Pack must beat SDSU.
  • The odd combination is because UNLV will win the tie-breaker against Utah St in a 2-way tie, but if UNLV, Utah St, and "Nevada" all finish 12-6 then Utah St will win the 3-way tie and get the #2 seed, Nevada will get the #3 seed, and UNLV ends up #4.
  • If UNLV loses today the Rebs would get the #4 seed by winning the tie-breaker of 11-7 teams against Boise St (but 4 or 5 seed doesn't really matter).
  • The benefit of a #3 seed vs a #4 seed is that the Thursday game would be at 8:30pm (for #3) compared to a 2pm game.  The evening game would certainly get a better walk-up ticket sales turnout of UNLV fans.
  • #4 seed would also mean facing a fresh Boise St hoping to advance to face SDSU
  • #3 seed would mean facing a team coming off a play-in game and hoping to advance to face "Nevada"

I'm not sure if the Rebs have been running out of gas late in the last several games, or just letting up on the gas pedal, but the trend over the last 6 games has been:

Fresno St: Bulldogs led first 16 minutes, by as much as 11 (tight game final 24 minutes, UNLV won by 1)
Nevada: Largest UNLV lead was 6 (went to OT and lost by 3)
UNM: tight game, UNLV took a lead with 6 minutes left and held it for 5-point win
CSU: Led by 35 with 7 minutes left (held on to win by 24)
SDSU: Maintained a 9-12 point lead from mid 1st half until final 5 minutes (won by only 3)
Boise St: Led by 27 with 10:53 left (won by only 10)

Diong has been invisible lately, nice to see him bounce back in a big way.

We've been getting much better at ball movement throughout the season as reflected in our dime totals, 19 tonight. Rememner those lackluster early season games when the team would finish with like 8 total assists and 20 to?

TJ has truly done a phenomenal job this year..
