This early study among others are part of the hope that O may cause less severe disease. Very contagious to the upper respiratory tract, but translates less to lower/lung tract.

Seems like it’s morphed into a common cold type of deal, which would explain the whole lack of vaccine effectiveness, too. If it’s a really mild strain and becomes said dominant strain, not necessarily the worst thing in the world. I don’t think Omicron is necessarily something to panic about yet.

This winter, it’s the combination of Delta (still the main variant), Omicron’s contagiousness, plus a flu season that is likely a more normal one.  Omicron’s doubling rate even as it slows is going to have a big impact through early winter at least.  I think a lot of older and vulnerable folks are unfortunately going to swell the excess mortalities count here by the time the season is over.

Yea I mean I pointed out as soon as Omicron was a thing that if it causes less severe illness it could be a net positive development; but that’s long term. In the short term it still poses a real threat to the healthcare system because of the potential raw number of infections.
 

Unfortunately I think it’s just going to be what it’s going to be. At this point the people likely to follow precautions are at least fully vaxxed and probably boosted, and the people that are not going to follow precautions probably aren’t vaxxed at all.

Do you trust mainstream media? I don’t. My main point is that I’m tired of the pandemic. I know omicron is serious and May overwhelm hospitals, but reporting on it is no longer changing behavior. @SalinasSpartanhas astutely pointed this out already.

i guess this has less to do with the story and more of my frustration with the pandemic and constant fear porn cycles. I suppose I could just not read the news instead of bitching about it.

Also- what’s up with the name calling? We can be civil here even if we disagree.

On a serious note, I just got word my closest cousin is in an ICU in Northern Colorado proned on a ventilator .  His wife was also admitted to the hospital and is on oxygen, but doing okay at present. Both are late 60s, she is a diabetic, and he has an a-fib cardio issue. 

We had a short, fun family reunion this summer in NoCo.  Families were split between vaxxed and not/anti-vaxxed including their (cousin and wife) two kid’s families (one vaxxed, other not).  I knew this might happen, and I’m just sick at heart over it. 

My cousin is a retired red neck wrasslin’ coach and collision repair teacher.  Finished 2nd nationally his second year in JC.  Almost a caricature of the hate Nancy and Joe crowd.  Attracted to Trump by mutual disdain.   The vaccine stance is drawn in a direct line to unthinking medical decisions via politics.  

Fvck Covid and just about everything right now.

It has f*ckall to do with media, mainstream or otherwise. It has to do with science.

And yes, the media has an ethical responsibility to report this.

Even if only a quarter of our fellow Murcans are still capable of ingesting information and subsequently adjusting their own behaviors as if they're not raging psychopaths, then should't they be informed of these developments so they can make more informed decisions?

And if it helps at all, we're all sick and tired of this shit. But as TEOTWAWKI scenarios go, this one still allows us to #MWCBoard, drink, smoke, and Netflix and chill, so it's not all that bad.

Yeah, I too read the tea leaves and posted as much not long after the initial early observations were getting play in news cycles.

And you're absolutely right IMO - I've long maintained that the people still wearing masks in stores were most likely already vac'd and (like my wife and I) simply being extra cautious, while conversely, the unvac'd were more likely to not be wearing masks, as they haven't given a shit (until its too late) since this thing started.

no surprise.  given South Africa residents demographics.  Very young population and almost 70% - 80% had already had covid.  Hopefully the people who have had it and the vaccinated have mild cases.  Those who still hold out from the vaccine and have not had it yet are at high risk.  There are a lot of them in the US.  Add in we have a much older and sicker population than South Africa and even vaccines do not stop death in very high risk populations.   Going to be an ugly couple of months I believe
