Gross

No shortage of that right now.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

I'd have been interested to see how loud and quick we'd tell everyone to eff off if the whole world tried to tell us what to do with the derivatives market in 2008.

Yeah but we cleaned up our act after 2008. You want to keep dealing with these outbreaks every 4-5 years.

We kinda already do. But the point is more highlighting the fact that it's not our call. This either requires american military intervention, one world government or multilateral trade agreements that have been in place with the expressed purpose of leveraging against china. Those tools are not in our toolkit.

When millions of people are getting sick and economies are shutting down the world  community can use their weight to push China into permanently shutting down these disgusting , inhumane wet markets. Who knows what future viruses could cause future outbreaks if we let them go on.

That's hard to do without tanks and nukes when trade is either heavily restricted or driven entirely by bilateral/two-party agreements.

Well when the whole world gets thrown into chaos because of their l markets our hand is kind of forced , wouldn’t you think

maybe if the trans pacific trade deals and partnerships had gone ahead we would have leverage.  but no that is dead and we went with two-party trade deals.

Govenor Cuomo giving another press conference.  His knowledge and ability to explain what is being done and what will be done in the near future in New York is so far beyond anything coming out of the Trump administration, leaders in congress or the CDC.  Govenor Cuomo is forward thinking and by far this nations leader at communicating all things COVID-19 at this time.

They are just stupid wet markets, that are not even vital to China's economy. They already shut the one down in Wuhan. It wouldn't need any military action.

And yet, they persist.

I'm not saying they should be there. I'm saying the world's ability to do anything about it peacefully is diminished right now.

And yet any impulse control he's shown re: total shutdown and martial law seems to be driven entirely by his personal hatred for Bill De blasio.

The bill the republicans put forth had plenty in there for working folks. Checks to every american taxpayer, bridge loans to small businesses to keep them afloat. The Democrats would rather using this to try to leverage political advantage than help people. It is disgusting.

What a concept, right? The GOP's bill is effectively giving companies a blank check and not doing much for the workers themselves.

China's economy is very dependent on trade with the western world. We have leverage.

Enough of this teams and shit. If there ever was a time when they wanted to pass something important...and at "warp speed", they should of had BOTH parties developing the bill. Not just republicans in private and then springing it for a vote. Why use that process? Probably so people can do the finger pointing like you just did....

Honestly, would you have felt the same in reverse?

For fks sake... can't they for once work bipartisan and put something out there without any worries about scoring points for their side and also taking points away from the other side?
