C’mon the media would never over state things and try and put people in a panic, would they?

I read a lot of news daily, including some pretty liberal rags, and I just don't see the fear mongering. Where is it?

We’ve already survived world war 3 this year, how bad could it be?

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

There are a couple of issues making the coronavirus a potential repeat of the Spanish flu.

First, it seems people can be contagious for several days before being symptomatic. So someone boards a jet, infecting a few flight attendants and various other passengers. They all get off and go their Merry ways. Some here, some there, some like the FAs travel around even more people. Imagine all the potential interactions in the next 4 days before patient 0 is diagnosed.

Which brings us to 2, there is zero immunity. While yearly influenza vaxs are not always matched they do blunt things. And each year people are exposed to various viruses developing some level of immunity.

Not so with this bug. But only 20% get sick enough to be hospitalized. Let's see what's 20% of 350 million.....and we have how many hospital beds?

I'm not saying this will happen, but it could. Even only half as bad would be, well, pretty bad. The government's response so far has been a joke, and worse, undermines the real experts. This is not something which should be driven by election year optics yet that's exactly what's driving it. And that should be a terrifying thought to anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together.

One of the Final Five..........

Let's just hope it isn't the "faded" virus!

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

In Solano County California a new coronavirus patient has been diagnosed.  She has not traveled outside the USA and has had no known contact with a person who has been outside the USA.  This seems to be like the guy in Italy whose exposure still has not been established.

It is unknown at this time whether the Solano patient has infected others.

But seriously: China locks down a province with a population twice twice the size of Texas. Countries evacuate their citizens. Countries close their borders. And it's the media that are overreacting? What are they supposed to do - not report?

I'm really glad the media around the world are paying so much attention to this. You don't have to believe the end is nigh to gobble up any coronavirus-related news. This is absolutely fascinating stuff - way more exciting than a bunch of septuagenarians fighting on TV, for instance. We have never seen anything remotely similar to what China has been pulling off in recent weeks. The coronavirus may blow over fairly harmlessly, but the lessons learned from the experience will be invaluable.

The joke was maybe the media overreacting to World War 3 was the problem. Besides we’re all dead from Net Neutrality already, remember?

Not to hijack the thread but this pandemic illustrates the benefits and efficiency of the private markets on solving problems in almost every issue from medicine to climate change. As much grief as big pharma gets, the rapid production and testing of new vaccines and drugs is mind boggling. You’re not getting that in Bernies world. On the other hand, everyone wants a vaccine until they have one ie...influenza which has killed twice as many people this year as total number of Covid 19 cases worldwide. As far as overreaction goes, never let a crisis get in the way of politics. Trump doubles the infectious disease budget of the CDC and he gets roasted by Schumer and Pelosi. I doubt the CDC can even spend that money.

Those stats on age are probably the same for the flu, the big difference is there is no vaccine yet. My concern is the new case found in Sacramento and the patient claims no travel and has no idea of how it was contracted, at least for right now. News says the case was found in Solano County, not Sacramento, Travis AFB is there, connection?
