Frustrated with recent budget cuts, Eastern Washington University faculty prepared a report this month that takes a critical look at the athletics department and suggests possibly eliminating the athletics department entirely.

The report analyzed the cost of the athletics program to be around $12 million to $14 million per year, but says it has had "no positive impact on our student enrollment, retention or recruitment." It was commissioned by the faculty senate and has been sent to the EWU administration, including President Mary Cullinan. At the end of the month, it will be presented to the EWU Board of Trustees.

...

In this model, the report says, "Eastern could become a national leader in resisting the ever-increasing costs of intercollegiate athletics, and become widely known for our commitment to academic excellence and controlling student cost burden."

Wonder if San Jose will be next...

I have a hard time believing an athletic program at anything below the D1 level adds any real value to a university. Wouldn’t be surprised if there is little to no value in programs for a lot of D1 universities as well.

“No positive impact on enrollment, retention or recruitment.”

It’s just like the stadium argument. You can point out that there’s very little private equity in stadium construction without massive subsidies but fans will argue how much money their school generates from the “investment.” The two “facts” don’t align for a reason.

Back in the day, I spent 2 years working in the Admissions office as part of work/study.  Back then, nobody who worked in the college admissions business ever admitted that sports helped the school.  Then, after 25 years of truly shitty football, we suddenly were ranked and made it to a bowl game (back when making a bowl was an accomplishment).  The next year, applications spiked 20%.  Future jumps coincided with other athletic achievements.  It's not a coincidence.  Athletics can be a great marketing tool.

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Boise went from 3000 applications per year to over 8000 from 2005-2015.   Which enabled them to be more selective and greatly increase the academic profile of the school.  Definitely doesn't work that way for everyone.

I believe the year after we beat OU in the Fiesta Bowl applications took a huge jump.

They could probably save money by dropping football and joining the WAC.

Wouldn't cost too much to have a basketball program, and olympic sports.  Plus, it would still provide a campus life for their students.

Yes in FBS.  Not sure about FCS.

Maybe if you are in North Dakota or Montana (no FBS programs in the State).  But schools like EWU are never going to be a big deal in their State.

Fund privately and cut the sports that don't matter.  EWU couldn't do it.

And it is starting to get humorous watching you on this.

I’m just throwing shit out there to see what sticks.

So which Aztec sports would you cut and which would you keep? Remember Title IX requires equal men and women participation.

Yup.  EWU has too much competition with Gonzaga/Wazzu.  And some of the worst facilities and support in the conference.
