ESPN AND BYU REACH NEW MEDIA RIGHTS AGREEMENT

https://byucougars.com/story/football/1292167/ESPN-and-BYU-reach-new-media-rights-agreement

Key parts: (more in the article)

No dollar figure shared

ESPN-BYU media rights agreement

Under the new regular-season media rights agreement, ESPN will continue to televise nationally a minimum of four BYU home football games each season. A minimum of three games will be carried on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, while additional games can air on the three same networks or ESPNU. As part of the agreement, at least one game each season will be carried live on BYUtv. All games will be available to stream on the ESPN App.

BYU bowl agreements

In addition to the home television rights agreement, BYU and ESPN Events—a division of ESPN—have also reached agreement for the Cougars to participate in ESPN owned and operated bowl games in 2020, 2022 and 2024. Under a separate agreement, the Cougars are also slated to appear in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 2021, 2023 and 2025.

The new bowl agreement with ESPN Events provides a bowl tie-in for BYU in 2020, 2022 and 2024 if the Cougars are bowl eligible and not selected to participate in a New Year’s Six bowl. Since 2011, the Cougars have played in four of the 16 bowls owned and operated by ESPN Events, including the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, 2015 Las Vegas Bowl, 2014 Miami Beach Bowl (now Frisco Bowl) and 2011 Armed Forces Bowl.

Under the terms of the new Independence Bowl agreement, the Cougars are slated to appear in Shreveport in 2021 and 2025 versus an opponent from Conference USA and in 2023 versus a team from the Pac-12. The Independence Bowl, televised on an ESPN Network, is the 11th-oldest bowl game in the country and will play its 45th edition in 2020. It was founded in 1976 and is played annually in December at Independence Stadium in Shreveport.

As part of both BYU bowl agreements, the Cougars also have an option to potentially participate in the Cheez-It Bowl in Arizona should its conference tie-ins (Big Ten and Big 12) be unable to provide an opponent. If applicable, that option can be exercised in lieu of one Independence Bowl and one ESPN Events bowl game. The Cheez-It Bowl airs on an ESPN network.

So BYU and the MWC is sharing the Cheez-it Bowl if the PAC12 and B1G isn't eligible or did the Mountain West lose it?

They will probably play against the MW.  The Cheez bowl is so low in the pecking order, both conferences probably won’t field a team.

In 2023, BYU plays a PAC12 team in the Independence Bowl

@Del Scorcho, see you / Utah in Shreveport, Louisiana in 2023?

(we both know ESPN will force this, and make it happen)

The casinos are going to love that matchup....

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

How much money does BYU make for the entire TV Deal?

It wasn't announced.

Tom Holmoe simply said "more money".

I assume it would be more than the AAC deal, since @Ibanez hinted as much.  But who knows....

Since it is only 2 hours drive from Dallas, I agree.  Could be could support for this one.

A lot of BYU fans live in the Dallas area.

Next year is BYU's 10th season in the WCC.  Let that sink in.

8 NCAA tournament appearances in 12 years as a member of the MWC (and 4 conference championships in the last 5 years).

Since joining the WCC, just two second place finishes and zero conference championships. 2 NCAA appearances in 8 seasons.  Looking like they may finish 4th or worse this year and an NCAA berth is once again out of reach.

Was the 2019 Hawaii Bowl so painful that BYU blocked out the memory?

Or more likely, this announcement was drafted months ago and when the green light finally came to release it this was overlooked.

No doubt, the WCC has been a more challenging conference than the MWC.  Looks like that is again the case this year:

Right now BYU is trying for a tourney spot still, and has a NET ranking of 29.

The hotels will especially love all the empty rooms ( rooming at the homes of the other faithful) and the restaurants the empty tables. (They will meet for potlucks), The bars will have lots of room for the opposing teams fans and one additional benefit, the ybu side of the stadium will have no beer lines.

Your more likely is accurate. BYU already announced at media days they had reached a tv deal, but not a bowl deal. BYU wanted better bowl options. That came in the form of Shreveport and the back up to the Cheez. Both of which give BYU a shot at a P5 team. Army and the AAC also have ties to the Independence bowl so it's possible BYU could avoid some of the lesser opponents and face a solid team in the Independence. They get some flexibility in the other three years for bowl placement.

BYU's deal is dependent on who they play and on what channel each year so it will vary but I assume it is probably more per minimum than the MWC contract and more than the AAC deal at maximum. The difference of where they fall in between those will be based on the opposing teams value each year.
