Coronavirus May Be Linked To Bat Soup

Recommended Posts

There was literally a movie about this back in the 1990's. Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman, I think a fruit bat bit a monkey and the monkey became infected.

You also don't hear about the Ebola outbreak in the Congo

Man we must not use the same sources for news because that was blown way out of proportion when that first flared up. Like people were freaking the +++++ out type levels of hysteria.

I think he means that it is still ongoing, and currently still worse than the coronavirus one.

Ebola - 50 new cases in the last month, death rate around 70%.

Corona - about 1000 cases, death rate about 3%.

That’s how I read it too. Ebola is yesterday’s media crisis even though it hasn’t gone away.

The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority was notified that a passenger contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after landing at RDU on Jan. 23 with concerns about potential exposure to the coronavirus. The passenger arrived at RDU from JFK after a trip to China that included time in Wuhan.

The Airport Authority responded immediately and continues to work with a number of partner agencies and outside organizations including the CDC, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, and Wake and Durham counties. The passenger was transported to Duke Hospital from RDU and is being evaluated by medical specialists while awaiting test results from the CDC.

According to state health officials, at no time were airport guests, employees and visitors at risk of infection and they do not need to take any special health precautions. Out of an abundance of caution, RDU followed the guidance of public health experts and completed appropriate disinfection protocols. Airport operations were not disrupted and RDU remains under normal operations.

RDU continues to work with public health experts regarding the release of information about this case. The CDC is the agency responsible for determining health screening protocols at airports.

Interesting that the media jumps all over this but ignores the fact that influenzas kill up to 650 thousand people per year yet less than 50% of people get a vaccine. Up to 17,000 deaths in the US. There are nurses in my hospital that refuse to get vaccinated. Probably the anti-China sentiment I suppose.

What media ignore influenza? Every year, newspapers, websites, TV, and radio are full of reports on flu waves, virulence of the current strain, the importance of vaccination, etc. Obviously it's not quite as exciting as an exotic new virus, but I think it's unfair to accuse the media of not doing their part.

I do agree is that people in general don't take the flu nearly as seriously as other illnesses. I notice this a lot on Reddit and discussion boards: Someone says they aren't vaccinated against measles - boy, all hell breaks loose. But at the same time, flu vaccination still seems to be considered pretty much a lifestyle choice to a lot of people.

Any kind of NEW life threatening source gets people freaked out. It’s all about not being used to it vs. getting used to it. And the media always plays on fear to get ratings.

Already in the genpop. When PRC announced the first cases outside of Wuhan (Beijing and Shenzhen) it was axiomatic that carriers of the new virus ha already boarded flights to global destinations out of PEK and HKG, including the West Coast of the United States.

Latency periods are unknown, meaning people were carrying and spreading this before the CDC set up screening centers at LAX at SFO.

Now it's simply a matter of time as this works its way through global populations.

The latest figures out of PRC (as per BBC) are 1,287 confirmed cases and 41 deaths. That's a mortality rate of 3.1%. By comparison, the Spanish Influenza outbreak of the early 20th century had an estimated mortality rate between 1%-2%, and the seasonal flu runs about .1%.

As a side note, a few months ago I had dinner with a former director of the NIH. He told me that over the last year or two there has been a lot of attrition at both the NIH and CDC, including some of their most brilliant minds who have gone to work overseas in more "science friendly" environments. That might explain the weak sauce response of the CDC in only setting up screening facilities at five US airports, including only two on the West Coast, when there are daily flights from Asian gateway cities into SAN, HNL, and SEA.

Hospital staff in Wuhan are wearing diapers while working, because they don't have time to use the bathroom in between treating coronavirus patients. https://news.yahoo.com/hospital-staff-wuhan-wearing-adult-043811475.html
