College bowls continue decline in attendance.

Recommended Posts

Well, it's marketing 101. Limit the product selection (teams), limit the market universe (audience). The Playoffs and the Access Bowls will probably continue to decline so long as they exclude so many teams, while the smaller bowls with their broader market appeal will hold steady or increase (that's where the increase was this season).

It's the Cinderella potential that drives much of March Madness. If College Football wants to catch the same lightning, they need to recognize that.

Read all about that.  It was a funky year for post season gridiron.  Too early IMO.  It actually was backasswards re Real Games in the calendar.  ESPN admitted such..a quirk of the calendar.  Oy.  Really?  The first full weekend of January was just a short bit away for good stuff. Or the immediate layup for it.  Ugh.

Ive attended five bowls since 2007. 3 Nevada ones, one Hawaii bowl and then the one in Phoenix that changes names every year.  I haven’t gone to one for a few years now because it’s too much money that I’d rather spend elsewhere. Wonder if that’s what the average bowl attendee is thinking too.

There are only two hard things that happen in American football by mandate.  College ball rules Saturday.  NFL rules Sunday.  There's some quirky bits along the way.  Thursday night ESPN college ball against wayward NFL Network.  NFL owns Sunday and Monday, which is usual.  We only go against NFL on Thursday and usually ESPN Thursday night wins the ratings.

At one time they used to black out local coverage of NFL and college bowls to encourage local fans to attend.  That was ruled illegal and the complaint was attendance would drop.  As if they cared anyway.  They make a ton off media rights and sponsor-ships so no big deal seeing empty seats.

In post season with ESPN, everyone gets a trophy and orange slices.  The only holdout is Sun Bowl CBS Normal.  That will die on the vine once PAC and ACC 3rd tier toss it out in El Paso. Fox and ESPN have PAC and XII. CBS Normal has SEC.  BiG is Fox.  ACC is horsheshit play by ESPN.  As is Longhorn Network.  Wonderful FOX has its game.  I love FS1.  It's focused only on middle America and west.  BiG, XII, and PAC.

If anyone magically appears on CBSSportsNet channel.kiss of death.

The bowl system was obviously more interesting when:

1. There weren’t so many of them and a team needed more than 6 wins to attend

2. Matchups between G5 and P5 schools were more common (e.g. old Holiday Bowl between WAC and Big Ten)

3. They didn’t have two .500 P5 clunkers squaring off against each other

4. There wasn’t a 4 team playoff that rendered the non-participating bowls meaningless
