SDSU at USU

Recommended Posts

Huge game in Logan Saturday. USU getting their ass kicked yesterday is bad news for the Aztecs. It would have been preferable for them to come in fat and happy. Now they are like a wounded bear with their backs against the wall.

The big key will be whether Queta or Mensah play. Hopefully both can play. It will be a fun game to watch as I have no rooting interest.

Yeah, I was personally hoping for a down-to-the-wire W for the Aggies.

As ECA said, Mensah (6-10 Nathan, #31) in all likelihood won't see the court on Saturday. As per today's article in the UT, he's waiting to see specialists, which tells me that until such time he won't be seeing any PT. However, as luck would have it, our equipment manager carries a spare Mensah (6-10 Joel, #35) who will be brought to Logan, though he will come off the bench.

Hoping there's a remote chance that Aguek Arop will see some PT, though as per today's article he still hasn't taken part in a full practice since his injury.

How the hell can Arop be injured? He looks like Adonis

Shoulder strain following slight dislocation in FoCo. The target for his return was this Saturday but that appears to be anything but certain.

This is exactly the kind of game the Aztecs have thrived on in the past. Defense overcomes adversity.

Mensah probably won't play.  Respiratory ailment

If Mensah has what I've got and I don't know about SD but it's been all over L.A., there's no way he will play on Saturday.

Boom goes the dynamite.

With Mitchell starting, our bench production has suffered somewhat. Short of AG's return Saturday, I'm hoping for quality minutes from Joel, Keshad, and Nolan. We've been a different animal altogether with two legit bigs in the low post, and with the progress Joel showed on Wednesday, I'm hoping he starts to close the development gap with Nathan - his 4 for 4 shooting with two strong finishes and 2 blocks were encouraging.

We have the tools to pull it off - I give us a puncher's chance. Can't find an early line on the game, but ESPN has USU as favorites with a projected win probability of 55%:

Who knows, Joel may be a better rebounder than Nathan if given minutes.  He'll have to be.

Based on what I saw in Fort Collins last month, Nathan plays much bigger than Joel.  Nathan is a big loss from my perspective regardless of how well Joel plays.

It's coming down to two people...Feagan and Shack...those two have to be on their games...shots got to drop...the D will keep them in the game...but outside shooting needs to loosen up that middle...we have the athletes...and we're better than UNLV...it's the BYU game all over again....

I see the blowout loss at unlv can effect this team in one of 2 ways. Either they come out with a chip on their shoulder and play well or their confidence is now rattled and vulnerabilities exposed such that sdsu blows them out.

Not having Nathan Mensah really changes this game.  With him, I think we win a close battle.  But losing him hurts this team in several ways.  Number one is that it's fewer fouls that we can absorb.  USU gets to the line a lot - 41st in the country and both Joel Mensah and Nolan Narain are extremely foul prone.  After the first 10 minutes, our bigs are not going to be able to aggressively challenge drives to the basket.  Number two, rebounding.  USU was already a better rebounding team than us, even with Queta's limited contributions this year.  Minus Mensah, our best rebounder, that edge will only be larger.  Three, the disruption of moving Matt Mitchell into the starting lineup.  Mitchell was great coming off the bench.  Our 2nd unit is shot-challenged with Trey Pulliam and Adam Seiko.  Mitchell can create and is easily the go-to option when there are limited offensive options on the floor.  Without him, that 2nd unit is going to struggle mightily for points.

Bet on USU, whatever the spread.  Hope I'm wrong.

SDSU will take this game at home because USU is hurting. Maybe they can shoot their way out of some contests but not this one. They’ll have a month to get healthy before the rematch. That will be a great game to watch.

Queta if he plays will not be as effective as we will need, he has been very tentative on that injured knee. Without him I believe the SDS will get the W.

To be honest without Queta, and Sam's nagging injury this team is not as strong as last years

FWIW we will be missing our best rim protector as well, so these factors offset somewhat. In watching Queta on the floor, he's not playing anywhere near his level last season from the limited sample size I've seen. Tough situation to be in for someone projected to be a high draft pick - a knee injury has repercussions that could affect his entire professional playing career, and he has to decide to what degree to risk further injury while in college.
