Well it is Maine. Maybe that’s why we’re hearing about it in the first place. Makes me wonder what percentage Pretrial incarcerations makeup in other states.

According to this, 61% of inmates back in 2012-13 were there for pretrial incarceration on a nationwide level.

Florida has been cutting down on it, apparently, yet the number of people in prison has actually increased, per this study.

Somewhat related and really interesting piece on how prevalent opioid addiction is among Maine's fishermen. The guy says he thinks up to 50% of the fishermen are affected by current or past addiction:
