Should the MWC Championship Game be played in a neutral Dome Stadium?

Recommended Posts

I tend to think the December weather has also been brutal to MWC Championship Game crowds. It doesn’t help the quality of play either.

Considering that the crowd in Boise was so small to begin with, would it help the league to find a domed stadium to host the game? It would probably more media friendly as well.

The problem is the MW schools don't travel well, and we are to spread out.   Vegas is the best location and the PAC 12 is going there for their conference championship game in 2020 and 2021.   In addition, most of our bowl games are pre-christmas and asking the fan bases to travel twice in short amount would hurt attendance.

It should be played in the new Las Vegas stadium moving forward. It's not like UNLV ever stands a chance at playing in the game, so it can't be a home field advantage.

If you think the crowds are small now, imagine playing the game in an 80k seat stadium in a town with few alumni of either school with 1 weeks notice to travel.

Terrible idea.

Only if they can borrow the Save Mart Center curtains to block off 40,000 seats.

Well at least in the next bowl cycle the #1 team goes to a different location and very likely after Christmas as well as the #2 team going to the AZ Bowl on NYE.  So there is relief to travel to Vegas for the CCG and then 3 weeks later to LA or Tucson.

The issue for playing a CCG in Vegas now or in the past is the winner goes back to Vegas in 2 weeks and that is a too short of a turnaround for travel and to go back to the place you just played at.

Hmmm... intriguing.  A dome you say... so would the game be in Pocatello, Moscow, or Flagstaff?

Aside from what everyone has already mentioned about the drawbacks of a neutral side from a crowd perspective, I also think there's something to be said for two things.

1. Rewarding the best team in the conference over the regular season

2. Increasing the chances that the best team in the conference goes to a NY6 bowl.

The latter benefits the individual institution that earned the right to be host, and the latter benefits the conference as a whole. When a team from the MWC goes to a big bowl, every team in the conference benefits financially.

Heck, depending on the scenario, it could even benefit the road team. Had Cinci beaten Memphis for example, not only would they have been the conference champion, but they would have had an additional ROAD victory over a ranked team to make the argument that they should go to the NY6.

That makes sen$e. Las Vegas has more to offer than any other MW city when it comes to attracting out of towners.
