Aztecs 6-0 for first time since 34-3 season

Recommended Posts

Aztecs gritted out a tough win against a long, athletic, and underrated Tennessee State team, 62-49. They are a resume killer - just above 200 RPI, a Saragn ranking below 150, but they are a dangerous team, and can clog up lanes and force tough shots. But the Aztecs found a way, winning the game at the line by shooting 94% at the line (16-17).

The last time the Aztecs began a season 6-0 they went 20-0 before falling to a team of vanilla ice-cream loving white boys from Utah and went on to finish the season 34-3 after falling to national champion UCONN in the Sweet 16 in the 2010-2011 season.

Next up is the Vegas Invitational against Creighton on Thanksgiving night, with the winner playing the winner of #12 Texas Tech-Iowa.

To put it in perspective, several days ago this Tennessee State team similarly stuck around in their game against #12 Texas Tech before losing 72-57.

The games were similar - the Aztecs shot 35.7% to Tenn St's 35.4%, while the Red Raiders shot 34% to Tenn St's 35.3%. Texas Tech out rebounded them 36-34, while we out rebounded them 35-34. Texas Tech similarly won their game at the line, shooting 38 and hitting 32.

I caught part of the second half of the game tonight and was impressed with the team play of the Aztecs. They have graduated all the guys with attitudes that thought they were better than they actually were. They still have one in Mitchell. However, all the other guys appear to be good team players and have good skills. The two transfer guards and the transfer post are very good players that mesh well with the returning guys.

From the MWC teams I’ve seen so far USU and SDSU are a notch above the others. I still think USU wins the conference if Queta returns. SDSU looks like it has a relatively easy OOC schedule so it’s tough to judge how good they really are. According to Sagarin, USU, SDSU, and UNM have played the easiest OOC schedules so far.

Does SDSU play in any holiday tournaments?

We're in the Vegas Invitational beginning Thanksgiving night. First round v. Creighton, winner gets winner lf #12 Texas Tech v. Iowa. It will be a good litmus test to see where we are.

Good observation regarding the graduation of the #-Stars, the highly-rated recruits who we began landing after the '11 season. Give me the underrated, under-recruited guys with a chip on their shoulder and willingness to buy in 100% over the savant any day. I see Mitchell as of that ilk as well, even if he's not as unselfish as Yanni or our other guards. I get why you perceive him as being more like the other recruits tho.

At one point, when the game was still in doubt, we had Arop, J. Mensah, Mitchell, Pulliam and Seiko. IOW, a SECOND line up.  Played that way for a few minutes.  Seiko and J. Mensah got meaningful minutes throughout.  Not seeing the court tonight; Narain and Johnson.  I like our squad but tonight revealed we have the potential for the same ol' disconcerting stupid long scoring drought. On to Vegas!

Yeah it’s strange how Flynn will go through periods where he can seemingly score at will and then other times where he disappears for a few minutes.

Two undefeated squads in the MWC is a very good thing. I think the Aggies will lose @ St. mary's on Friday, sadly.

You know your schedule is crap when you’re talking up a 277 ranked KenPom win at home.

Aztecs look like a quality team but that schedule is soft as you can get. Ridiculous that Dutcher didn’t schedule a couple more games, test the team with a 1 off away game at P5.

This game did point out some weaknesses though.  When shots aren't falling, like last night, a team will usually drive to the basket to either get to the line or at least get a higher percentage look.  We struggled with that.  Our guards are really savvy and play under control but seem to lack that 2nd gear to beat their guy off the dribble and get to the basket.  Pulliam and Feagin both gave it a go in the 2nd half, but with not-so-great results.  If they can't finish at the rim, at least we can work on some plays where they look to find Wetzel or Mensah for an easy shot.  The Aztecs' free throw rate is 297th in the nation - we're not taking it to the rack effectively and not getting to the line.

This wasn't a brag about beating a bad team, it was a brag about a milestone we haven't reached since our landmark 34-3 S16 season, and notice of a possible indicator of good things to come. Jelly much? Miss people giving a shit about your has-been lightning in a bottle? Well, get used to it.

Anyway, scheduling the 2nd game at Provo filled the P5 road role (much like we're going to fill Reno with our roll. Again.).

And we didn't choose Tenn St. Both Tenn St and LIU were assigned campus games as part of the Las Vegas Invitational, where we will play Creighton and either Iowa or Texas Tech this Thurs/Fri.

So get off our tip and go replace those broken fire extinguishers you've been meaning to get to since the offseason.

BYU fills the role as a P5 road team 😂

Sure you weren’t talking up a 277 KenPom home win. Great win!!!
