MWC With 7 Bowl Eligible Teams...

Recommended Posts

And even with one week left in the regular season, and if they all lost, only one team (Utah State), would be at the minimum required wins for a bid. But they’re playing UNM, so its a pretty good bet that they’ll win that one.

6 bowl tie-ins, 7 eligible teams... sure hope no one gets left out, would be a shame if that happened. Congrats to all our MWC, bowl eligible teams, this year! Would love to see a post season bowl sweep as well!

Sadly for Wyoming there is a significant possibility that the Cowboys are the "odd man out" for the second year in a row when bowl bids are handed out.

Right now Wyo, USU, and Nevada are competing for the 5th and 6th bids.  Wyo has to play Air Force.  USU and Nevada get UNM and UNLV.  If all three win, then Wyo wil be in.

The Big 10 won't be filling all of their bowls, surely the MWC will get one of those openings.

Big Ten Bowl Ties, Affiliations

A Big Ten team will be in the Rose Bowl – it’ll be the champion if not in the College Football Playoff.

College Football Playoff Semifinal: If Selected

1. Rose Bowl vs. Pac-12

2. Citrus Bowl vs. ACC or SEC
– Agreement for Citrus is for five different teams in six years, so no Penn State, Minnesota or Michigan, if possible.

3. Outback Bowl vs. SEC
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan or Northwestern, if possible.

4. San Diego Country Credit Union Holiday Bowl vs. Pac-12
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern or Wisconsin, if possible.

5. TaxSlayer Bowl vs. SEC OR
Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl vs. SEC

– ACC and Big Ten combine in the Music City and TaxSlayer, with each getting three appearances in six years. The Big Ten played in TaxSlayer in 2015 and the Music City in 2016, 2017 & 2018. It’s almost certainly going to be in the TaxSlayer, but no Iowa or Penn State, if possible.

New Era Pinstripe Bowl vs. ACC
– It’s not official, but the bowl would prefer to have eight different teams in eight years, so no Indiana, Iowa, Northwestern, Penn State or Wisconsin, if possible.

Redbox Bowl vs. Pac-12
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Nebraska or Purdue, if possible.

Quick Lane Bowl vs. ACC

Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl vs. Mountain West
– Agreement for three SERVPRO First Responders and three Armed Forces bowls in six years. The Big Ten hasn’t been in the Armed Force Bowl since 2014. The Big 12 is contracted to play in the SERVPRO First Responders in 2019.

If Wyo loses and USU wins they would be tied at 7 wins.  I bet the Wyoming fanbase is the tie breaker there.  Wyoming is one of the best traveling fan bases, especially if it is the New Mexico bowl.

Looking at what Lobo Man posted, maybe it can be MWC v MWC in the Armed Foces Bowl.  There is precedent on this.

I see 8 bowl teams from the B1G, maybe 10 if MSU and NU win next week.  MSU should beat Maryland, but I doubt NU wins vs Iowa.  So 9 with OSO in the playoffs opening a spot probably.  With the Big 12 getting the First Responders Bowl in 2019, that fills their bowls right?

I think the Sun Belt Rule is still being used, Aka... No 7 wins teams get left out of a bowl because a 6 win gets the bid instead (all 7+ teams get bowl bids before handing out bids to 6 win teams).  Now the win total can only have 1 FCS win counting toward the total, so you can't load up your schedule with FCS games to get to a bowl game.  This year Liberty has 2 FCS wins in their 6-5 record so they have to beat New Mexico St again (they beat them on 10/5/19) in order to get bowl eligible.

If it comes down to that then Wyoming's win over Missouri will be the big win that they have on the resume this year that they lacked last year.

The problem with it coming down to 7-win Wyo vs 7-win USU is that 6-win USU is already slightly higher ranked (Massey) than 7-win Wyoming, and give USU another win and Wyoming another loss and that gap will grow.

Lower tier bowls aren't about ratings though.  They are more about tickets and fan bases.  You might be right but leaving a 7 win Wyoming team out of the New Mexico bowl won't be easy

Plus, support-wise, Wyoming is probably the most popular team in the MWC, for Lobo fans. If Wyoming ends up in the NM Bowl, they'll get the local support for sure!

Isn't there some rule that no 7-5 teams get left out of bowls? Not that I'm sure I want to see this USU team play another game...

That's what I posted above, it was call the "Sun Belt" rule year ago...   So, 7 win smaller conference teams were not left out of bowls, because 6 win bigger fans would get in before them.  For sure all 6 win teams should get in before any 5 win teams (5 win teams have got bowl bids before, because a lack of 6+ win teams).
