UNLV2001

UNLV at Cal

Recommended Posts

Damn UNLV. You guys are so damn close, but still something seems so far... You guys could just as easily be 3-0 as 1-2.

I know Long got his points tonight, but I rather have seen that ball in Hardy's hands on that last possession despite his cold shooting in the 2nd half. Nice to see Tillman produce.

Not trying to pile on or down the coach, but I see this as a coaching loss. In fact, UNLV has lost every 2nd half this year so far.

Not saying our young coach cant right the ship, but Mark Fox slapped Otz around a bit 2nd half and in OT. Just look at UNLV shot attempts vs Cal shot attempts late regulation and OT. UNLV took tough contested shots that were blocked or missed, followed by easy wide open 3 in the corner and free bunny under the basket for Cal. Clearly outcoached in the last two.

Otz needs to reassess, readjust and have his team tighter, with more attention to detail especially in the 2nd half of games. Where they tend to fall off the scout and get sloppy with execution.

Its early. Lots of bball to play and mwc is always an entirely new season. Go Rebels!

Odd to see so much blaming of the refs and players (no depth, etc).

There is some depth, but the rotation for Otz has been super short since game one. He's not even playing guys he recruited minutes to spot starters.

Woodbury and Beck would probably be decent depth players on this team at least. And why give Coleman a ship and then never play him? Let Blair and Coleman walk on again and leave Shibel in az. Player evals need to be much better moving forward.

Otzelberger can only finish in the bedroom.

Whether it is appropriate to chirp this kind of stuff for your MWCBoard followers is for you and them to decide.

But please remember it is disrespectful to spout clever things like this directly to our coaches, or coaches of any team.

CAL was abysmal last year, but early on this year they seem much improved.  I think they're better than a 12th place PAC team.

It’s a dig at pH. He said the same thing after Nevada lost to Utah. I’m honestly not sure you can say a win or loss is bad or good until 10 games are so into the season. All the times teams are better or worse then preseason rankings. Utah St is a great example of that last year.

The Runnin' Rebels held their largest lead of the game (65-56) with just under six minutes to play in regulation, but shot just 1 of 8 to close the second half.

Mitrou-Long scored 16 points, while junior guard Amauri Hardy added 15. The Golden Bears (2-0) had four players in double-figure scoring led by Matt Bradley's game-high 23 points.

TURNING POINT: Cal used a 16-2 run over the last six minutes of regulation and the first two and a half minutes of overtime.

STAT OF THE GAME: There were 20 lead changes and nine ties throughout.

QUOTABLE: "For our team to be successful we need to defend, rebound and take care of the ball. In the first half, we did a great job taking care of the ball but didn't defend how we would like to and they scored too easily. In the second half, our defense kicked in but then we had too many turnovers. We have talked a lot about it - for us to be successful we need to do those things night in and night out." UNLV head coach T.J. Otzelberger

NOTES:
- UNLV fell to 5-3 all-time vs. Cal and to 2-1 in games played at Haas Pavilion. The three games in Berkeley (2004, 2012, 2019) have been decided by a combined six points.
- It was the earliest road game by date in UNLV men's basketball history. The Runnin' Rebels' previous earliest road game in any season was during 2007-08 at San Diego (Nov. 17).
- Tillman and junior forward Mbacke Diong both had a game-high eight rebounds.
- Junior guard Jonah Antonio went 3 of 5 on 3-pointers, while Mitrou-Long was 7 of 11 from the field.
- The Runnin' Rebels made 46.7 percent of their 3-point tries (7 of 15).
- The Golden Bears made 50.9 percent from the field (29 of 57).
- UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,073 straight games.

NEXT FOR THE RUNNIN' REBELS: UNLV will play its second straight road game against a Pac-12 opponent on Friday, Nov. 15 at UCLA at 8 p.m, televised by Pac-12 Networks.

Way to early to gauge too much about this team except that they've had chances to win the last 2 games and crumbled in the final minutes.  It's November.  If this is happening in late January, I'll be worried.  Depth could be an issue for this team.  They really need Hamilton to turn it on.  His development will go a long way to the success of this team.
