Well he did yesterday in a very mild and diplomatic way but it was enough for the state TV of China to pull all NBA games and it is reviewing their relationship with the NBA. All because Adam Silver said the NBA supports freedom of speech of its employees.

Obviously it wasn't a big F U from Adam siler but better than nothing and in corporate speak kinda was. It was enough to really piss china off.

It was a good response. Especially considering how quick other corporate magnates are to completely bend over for the Chinese market. Hopefully Silver maintains a measured hard line on the issue.

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

Blizzard Studios is now the latest company to bend the knee to China. A competitive Hearthstone player was just banned and his $10k winnings was taken away because he said "support Hong Kong" in a post match interview. The gaming community is now boycotting Blizzard by unsubscribing to World of Warcraft, cancelling preorders, protesting competitions, and are also trying to attach Blizzard owned characters to the pro Hong Kong protests so that the games will get banned in China. I think that last part is pretty damn smart.

This is the sticky wicket Silver stepped into, and this is why it was so important for him to connect on his second attempt to address it.

And he did.

Big time.

In a new statement, Silver said “the NBA will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees and team owners say or will not say on these issues. We simply could not operate that way.” Later, to reporters, Silver said he understands that there are consequences to the kind of comments Morey made and “we will have to live with those consequences.” He called CCTV’s decision not to air Thursday’s preseason game between the Nets and Lakers “unfortunate” but added that “if that’s the consequence of us adhering to our values, we still feel it’s critically important to adhere to those values.”

In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

This certainly debunks the talking point that "Freedom and Democracy" are somehow inseparably linked to "Capitalism."  It appears that authoritarian China is very good at capitalism without needing to worry about "Freedom and Democracy."  Market Authoritarianism seems to work pretty well for the Chinese.

Steve Kerr is a coward.

Pretending that he doesn't understand the story about China and Hong Kong.

The Dubs are more popular in China than the Rockets... maybe the only team that's true for. And all the tech money propping up that team right now is intermingled with China. He's in a tougher spot than Morey.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

I'm glad to hear at least that Silver is standing up a little bit. Good on him. I hope this plays itself out with the NBA telling the Chinese government that they don't get to tell Americans what they can or can't say in America and sticking to that.

I also want to know what Charles Barkley thinks about this.

The whole situation with the NBA and Blizzard Entertainment has caused more people to look into what else has been changing. I just noticed this morning concerning Maverick's jacket change on Top Gun 2. The Japanese and Taiwanese flags have been removed, most likely for the Chinese markets and the film is being produced by Tencent.

Cancel the NBA

It's been dead to me since they moved the Sonics. May as well pull the plug entirely at this point.

His dad was a spook. What do you expect? He's going to toe the company line.

It’s still cowardly of him. Him and Pop are really engaged in social justice issues, take every opportunity to rip Trump, but then they have nothing to say about this? They have made millions and won multiple titles, sack the hell up and say something! They are some of the only coaches/GMs that can realistically speak out without losing their jobs, so they could actually help the NBA stand up to China in this situation.

But..... silence.

People upset that the NBA is not standing up against China curbing protests.

Same people happy to see Colin Kaepernick not have a job because he peacefully protested.

Nike: backs (and profits off of) Kaep after protesting.

Also Nike: pulls Rockets merchandise off the shelves in China because a Rocket’s employee supported protests.
