As crazy as this might sound, I do wonder why MLB teams haven't hired head coaches from the college ranks to take over as managers.  You see them occasionally leaving for the NFL and NBA.  Why not baseball?

It has just been a long time.  Dick Howser left Florida State for the New York Yankees job in 1980.  His replacement at Florida State just retired this year.  When Dave Roberts got the Dodgers job, the other finalist was Nebraska head coach Darrin Erstad, who just retired this year from Nebraska.

Needed that so bad.. Now we have Cole pitching game 3, feel pretty good about that one. But the Astros bats need to wake up.

Just got home from Minute Maid....what a game! Cole in Game 3 gives us a good shot. Like you said though, the Stros bats need to come alive. A Nats-Astros WS would be an amazing matchup of 2 great pitching staffs.

You'd think someone like a Jim Schlossnagle (TCU) or a Paul Mainieri (LSU) would be getting calls from MLB teams.  The former has built up TCU into a national power with several College World Series appearances.  The latter has a national championship, a runner up and several CWS appearances.

Yet they can't (or won't) get a sniff at a Major League opening.  Why is that?

Baseball seems to have progressed a ton the last few years with all the metrics and what not.. But in regards to managers they still run things like the 60’s. Leashes are so short in sports these days anyways, seems like everyone has one foot out the door before they even start.

My guess is that baseball is unique because it has an extensive minor league system; completely different than any other major sport.

90+% of the players come thru the system, even the college players, and the same goes for managers. Even the two names masterfrog mentioned, Howser and Erstad, were major leaguers.

Seems like that TCU coach has job security for life and probably a lot of power.  That would all be gone in MLB.

Agreed.  That said, the NHL minor league system is very similar to MLB.

Anyone know why there was a 20 min delay in the Yankee game?

Umpire was injured for some reason, so they had to get a new guy and I guess the head office had to get involved for some reason
