SJSU admission - you need a 4.0 GPA and 1525/1600 SAT to get into Engineering CS?

SJSU admission - you need a 4.0 GPA and 1525/1600 SAT to get into Engineering CS based on SJSU admission guideline below for individual majors (aka SJSU EI - freshmen impaction eligibility index score calculation)?

Tough admission and sounds more difficult to get into than Cal.

Wonder any football/basketball player majors in Engineering:)

To be fair, Sociology major doesn't require much of a brainiac to get admitted, 3.0 GPA and a 600 SAT score and you're in!

It is not surprising that it would be tough to get admitted in Engineering CS at SJSU.

Sociology at SJSU is the same Eligibility Index (EI) as Physics or Mathematics or Economics at SJSU. Over 80 SJSU majors in Fall 2018 had an admissions Eligibility Index of only 2950.

But a 3200 EI was Fresno State's lowest admission standard for any major in Fall 2018. Some majors are higher.     http://fresnostate.edu/studentaffairs/are/documents/admissions/fall%202018%20impaction%20criteria%20ftf.pdf

That means Fresno State's Sociology major has a higher admission standard than SJSU majors in Physics, Mathematics, Economics, etc. :D

Fresno State's lowest admission requirement increased to 3400 for Fall 2019.

Overall it is tougher to just be admitted to Fresno State than to SJSU (although yes SJSU does have some majors with higher admission standards than Fresno).

How many here can actually meet SJSU's 4.0 and 1525 SAT minimum for engineering CS?

And the number of SJSU Engineering graduates almost double between 2013 and 2018 from less than 1153 grads to 2179.

To put that into perspective, that's a 3.0 GPA and 800 SAT score.  This means you can completely flunk/bomb the SAT and just maintain a cool B average.

And further perspective: Cal State East Bay which is at the very bottom of the California state school still has a 3.1 GPA and 1090 SAT scores.

Probably more than you'd think. Most of the fans posting here come across as greek philosophers when compares to most (though certainly not all) sjsu posters. 4.0 gpa these days is easy and sat score is just study and prep classes.

Anyway, the only reason that sjsu engineering has high entrance reqs is because they're flooded with applications. And the reason theyre flooded with apps is location.   boise with the highest number of truck driver program applications and would have the highest entrance requirements amongst rig certification programs. Coincidentally, theres a high number of trailer parks and diesel rigs per capita. Fresno’s viticulture or nursing programs certainly have higher requirements compared to to other FS majors.

Its great that sjsu has a healthy and strong engineering program.  It doesnt make sjsu some type of academic giant.

Stop peddling bs...

Is this based off of the new SAT or the old one? For the new one, 1600 is a perfect score.

Pretty much the norm for Cal Tech wanna-bees.

1525-1600 for SJSU CS? I have a hard time believing that.

Simple google search. https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/sat/new-sat-tips-planning/new-sat-about-sat/a/scoring-on-the-redesigned-sat

Lol that is not right.

  • The formula given by your own link states that it weights the math score by a factor of 3. If you got a 730 math and a 650 verbal SAT score, then the score you'd use for the college of engineering eligibility index would be 710.
  • Your math is wrong. The impaction index states that it is 800*GPA+SAT. That means that if you have a 4.0, then you need a 1500, not 1525, to get to 4700 for computer science as listed
  • Local students get a .2 gpa bump in the index - equivalent to 160 points off of your SAT requirement
  • You get "bonus points" for AP and honors classes, to the point that 8 honors class semesters would bump a 3.76 to a 3.95 (I played around with this calculator - https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/eligibility-index)

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

Yeah we're going to talk football smack to a sjsu fan.

again, this is the requirement published on SJSU admission below and approved by cal state board.  All prospective applicants are directed to this page.

http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultsfreshmen/F2018.html

So, when I do the calculation, I get minimum SAT score of 1450. Because of the way the EI is calculated for engineering applicants, with more weight on math, and 4.0 GPA combined with an 800 Math and 650 ELA will get you to an EI of 4725.
