Mass shooting at the Gilroy garlic festival

I don't see any hint of mental illness in this case. Usually I'm pretty good at sniffing that kind of thing out especially after learning to cope with narcisists for the last 50 years.

Anger and hate are being taught in the home. My suggestion, seems simple enough, is to stop programming hate and racism in the house. Look at what Fred has done to Joferey for example.

I think you have to be half off your rocker to shoot anyone let alone a 6-year-old.

Hate and anger are probably enough to convince an anti social animal that they would be doing a service to their, insert race here, by shooting people.

Didn't the U.S. travel advisory put out a warning to U.S. citizens to stay away from Chicago?

Meanwhile in Chicago, another typical weekend. Any bets on how many of the guns used were legally purchased by the shooters?

I don’t live in Chicago and could give two chits about it. This is the second mass shooting that has involved northern Nevada and that freaks me out.

My geography must be off. I thought Gilroy was in California.

The shooter was from Fallon. At least based on the story I read in the RGJ???

I could be starting rumors too?? Gun sold there, not sure the shooter is from there based on what I reread.

It's possible, I read the family moved there 18 years ago, but also the father was Santa Clara County Supervisor twice.

White supremacism and racism is not mental illness. Very few if any of the mass shootings involve mental illness. Just old fashioned hatred.

No matter how much people want to scapegoat mental health, it's rarely an issue.

Rarely does not mean never.

I'd like to see gun licenses, like car licenses. Different levels and insurance for different kinds. And buying ammo would require checking and recording the license. Insurance would be used for victims of gun violence. That's not taking away guns, just regulating it. Nothing in there about free and unfettered access. Especially not when it negates another right, the right to bn life. Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Despite the NRA it's clear some kind of compromise is needed as both deserve protection, not just one.

Shooter lived in SJ. Went to Nevada to buy the guns. Advocated white supremacist literature.

No need to twist yourself into a pretzel explaining this one. Or why white supremacists are acting out more frequently at this point.

And I'm now going to go hang out on my geology thread while the same tired pro and con arguments play out over the next 15 pages.

Because the NRA bought the soul of this country. Driving and alcohol limits haven't eliminated drunk driving but they've certainly dropped the body count.

All of the in car technology is distracting drivers more based on info I'm reading.  We're actually making driving more unsafe.

Perhaps it's not as easy as restricting guns in one area.  The California gunman bought his in Nevada.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/30/health/nevada-gun-laws-gilroy-garlic-festival-trnd/index.html

The latest attack happened Sunday in Gilroy, California, after a 19-year-old shooter snuck onto the grounds of the Gilroy Garlic Festival and killed three people. He carried out the massacre using an AK-47 style rifle -- a weapon that officials say can't be legally purchased or transported into California.
But the man bought the rifle legally in Nevada. And so the shooting will no doubt focus a spotlight on Nevada's gun laws, some of which are among the nation's least restrictive.
When a gun show takes place in Nevada, rates of gun deaths and injuries rise in neighboring California during the next two weeks, according to a study published in 2017. But when the gun shows take place in California, this local effect is not seen -- even when accounting for California's 10-day waiting period.
Some facts about gun laws in Nevada:
  • The right to bear arms is enshrined in the first article of Nevada's constitution: "Every citizen has the right to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes."
  • Carrying an unconcealed firearm in public is legal.
  • There is no mandated waiting period before buying a gun.
  • You can bring a gun to a polling place, to a casino and to a bar.
  • You cannot bring a gun to a school or a university campus.
  • Nevada voters passed a ballot measure in 2016 requiring a background check for firearm transactions between private parties, including at gun shows. But the state attorney general put it on hold, saying it wasn't enforceable.
The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a gun-control advocacy group that tracks firearms legislation, gives Nevada a grade of D on its gun laws -- lower than more restrictive states such as California or Massachusetts but higher than 22 states that scored an F. (California was given a grade of A by the law center.)
