2/3ds of Americans think the EC should go

I think the point of the thread is this: The popular vote thinks the popular vote should have the say.

The Republicans (who are old, white and racist, per Orange) think there should be protections against the "tyranny of the majority."

I'm not even a Republican (I'm a Palestinian Nationalist) and I think the popular vote idea is stupid. For one, it's a non-starter because it would require a constitutional amendment that would never happen, and two, it'd result in rural areas being further disenfranchised.

+++++ the rural people. What do the rural people matter to the needs and wants of a continent sized, 330 million, economic giant that the rest of the world depends on for stability?

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

Eh, give it time. They were in the vogue a while ago. The kids will think they're cool again at some point.

When we get the next Democrat president to be sure .

Currently we cowtow to each rural voter a shitload more than any inner-city voter.  Why is that preferable?

And try to phrase your response without sounding like an 18th century white, landowning male justifying his own suffrage.

Yeah, but Madison and his mentor especially were the villains.

Madison and Hamilton hated each other for a good portion of their public lives.

Actually, "the country" voted for Hillary last election.

Good point.  But the EC voted for Trump. It accomplished EXACTLY what it was intended to.  Remove the overwhelming bias of one large state (CA) and Trump won the popular vote amongst the other 49 states.

I'm against the facepalm as a rule, but...

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

LOL, you don't think this is true?

Madison wasn't a federalist, bro.  200-year-old newsflash.

The newsflash is you think this is news to me, him, or pretty much anyone on this forum. Welcome to the board.

No, I know it's true. So does @thelawlorfaithful

You are always complaining minorities don't get the vote, they aren't represented.  Their needs don't get met because minorities don't have equal rights.

Well if you were consistent you would think the Electoral College was great as it gives the small states a larger minority voice in our elections.   As was intended.

Not that i expect you to ever be consistent.

That’s because minority PEOPLE will generally favor his ideology whereas minority STATES will not.

I was just being facetious.  The electoral college ensures that the president is somewhere between what you get from the Senate (equal from each state) and the House (equal by population at least in theory).  I think it is a pretty good balance.

If you want democratic socialism in America, you can have it - move to Vermont (where you have a public-option for health-insurance) .  If you want ultra-conservative religiously influenced government - move to Utah or Alabama.  With a bunch of States in between, why do we need an all-powerful central government to rule all 330 million?

Could not agree more.

This is all just a tantrum.  We need to throw away the process through which the president has been elected for the past 200 or so years because the Democrats lost an election.

That's exactly all it is. It's another pipe dream like the "term limits for SCOTUS" and reparations nonsense they've been peddling as of late.

Of all the EC supporters here, how man of you waive the Stars and Stripes on your house?  Or your car?  Or wear American flag bullshit on your person?

You're pretty much saying we're not a nation when you demand that states be given their own prerogative in choosing the president.  We're either united, or not.  The presidency is not a "local matter".

I don't understand one thing in this post.  Not one thing!

Well, except for the fact that you're angry!
