What do the Lobos Look Like this year

Recommended Posts

New Faces

1.     Transfer Sophomore PG JJ Caldwell 4.0*

He was a highly recruited PG for Texas AM. He had flashes of being very good, but can’t say he is a proven performer. He hasn’t played in more than a year.   Needs to see if he makes academics, enrolls in school, and transitions to Lobo basketball.  There is a lot of hype – but let’s see if he reaches the floor.

Impact:  Neutral

 2.     Transfer Sophomore SG Zane Martin 2.0*

Townson State transfer who averaged 19.8 points and 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game … A slasher to the basket….He should make an immediate impact for the Lobos.  The Mountain West is tougher than the CCA – but his skills should translate.

Impact: Positive Impact

 3.     Incoming Freshman SF Emmanuel Kuac 3.0*

A 6-7 small forward: Unfortunately for him, the Lobos are deep at the Small forward.  He has promise, but may only see minimum minutes.

Impact:  Neutral

 4.     Incoming Freshman PF/C Antwan January 4.0*

A big PF/C for the Lobos.  A rim protector.  He he will log some minutes and have a positive impact, but he will take time to develop.  He has at least 3 upperclassmen in front of him.

Impact:  Minor Positive Impact

5.     Incoming Freshman SG Daniel Headding 2.0*

High motor, sounds like a great kid.  Prediction - A project to develop to a good MWC SG.

Impact:  Neutral

6.     Transfer SG Vante Hedrix 4.0*

Another talented gifted athlete who could be a boom or bust kid.  He is a SF or SG – but the Lobos have lots of talent at that position.  If he wants to play he will need a big heart and demonstrate his skills everyday in practice to beat out others at his position.  Same as JJ Caldwell… needs to see if he makes academics, enrolls school, and transitions into Lobo basketball.  They is a lot of hype – but let’s see if he reaches the floor.

Impact: Neutral

7.     PG/SG Transfer JaQuan Lyle 4.7*

Hard to call JaQuan a new comer, but he hasn’t played a minute for the Lobos in the past two years.  An all Big Ten performer with serious skills.  On the high end he could be the Mountain West player of the year.  On the downside he may struggle returning from a serious injury. He hasn’t seen the court since Spring of 2017.   Going optimistic here.

Prediction:  High Positive Impact

8.     PG/SG Kurt-Curry Wegscheider

Recruitment came out of left field.  Did the Lobo catch lightning in a bottle?  Maybe? But for now the Lobos need to see if he can play at this level.

Prediction:  Neutral Impact

 Who is left

9.     PG Junior Keith McGee 2.0*

I like to watch Keith McGee play.  Athletic, slasher with good shooting skills.  Decent ball handling skills.  Needs to improve decision making skills and play defense to match his skill set.   He will be improved.

Prediction:  Positive Impact

 10. Drue Dinnon 4.0*

I really like Drue.  The perfect PG in the half court set.  Ball handling skills, sees the court, great decision making tools, keeps the ball moving, and a solid shooter.  Downside………foot speed.  He is not going to blow past you and is challenged to guard fast quick guards.  In the right setting he can give the Lobo quality minutes

Prediction:  Positive Impact

11. Tavian Percy 2.0*

Didn’t see the court much last year.  With all the talent the Lobos recruited in the backcourt, he will have a tough time finding minutes to play.

Prediction: Neutral Impact

12.  Vance Jackson 4.0*

Happy to have Vance back.  Tested the waters of the Draft and decided to come back for one more year. Came on strong at the end of the year.  Should be one of the best G/F in the league this year.

Prediction:  High Positive Impact

13. Makuach Maluach 2.0*

Really root for Makuach.  After an outstanding freshman year he struggled in his sophomore campaign.  Improved ball handling and rebounding, but  shooting took a downturn. I’m calling it a sophomore slump, and look for a big improvement this year.  He needs to step it us because he will be challenged to find minutes at the SF position.

Prediction:  Positive Impact

14. Carlton Bragg 4.7*

Carlton played very well near the end of the season.  He was eligible at mid-year and after ½ a dozen games begin to become a force in the front court for the Lobos.  Should be an outstanding player this coming year.  He needs to work on staying out of foul trouble by improving his defense positioning.

Prediction:  High Positive Impact

15. Corey Manigault 3.0*

Talented and gifted athlete who needs to get out of his own way to become an outstanding performer.  Hoping he plays within his talents and stops trying to do to much.  Good rebounder, good footwork, shoots well, and plays decent defense.

Prediction:  Positive Impact

16. Valdimir Pinchuk

A 6-11 center with decent basic skills, good footwork, team player, and outstanding desire.  Unfortunately, this did not translated to good play on the court.  One example, has a nice looking shot but shoots less than 54% from the line.  Struggles to finish at the rim.  Takes time for big men to develop.  He still has a chance to be a solid player.

Prediction: Neutral Impact

Coaching:  The Lobos absolutely got torn up last year by quick slashing guards.  Disrupted our offense and opened up the defense.  Coach Weir has completely tried to revamp the backcourt.

Prediction:  If it works the Lobos will contend...if it doesn't... howls will be whimpers at the Pit.

Have heard that one of the incoming freshmen will not qualify.

Update to the Lobo profiles:

Valdimir Pinchuk has transferred to University of San Diego - can't blame the guy.  He was nice depth at the Center position -- but I am sure he was looking for a bigger role to play on a college team.

Antwan January:  Is not with the Lobos.

This thins out the frontcourt -- depth could be an issue during the season.

The back court will be strong, Caldwell has been cleared to play, Vante Hendrix will be eligible in December,  Wegsheide has been cleared for this Fall (awaiting passport and visa).

Prediction:  It will be a fun year to watch -- the big question - Can Coach Weir get all this talent on the same page - i.e. put their egos in check, play defense or is it a complete team melt-down.

Honestly, it could go either way.

Weir has still banked some good will from me after he took a makeshift basketball team to within 4 minutes of an NCAA Tournament spot. Last year was a disaster though and with Nevada losing everybody and the talent he has on the team, The Lobos need to be near the top of the league this year

Hopefully Weir has adjusted his theories he tried last year. I was impressed the first year, but like you said, last year was a disaster, and I hope he has made some adjustments. He has to get that team to play for him, he lost them last year.

Weir has added two coaches to his staff that have previous head coaching experience.

Dan McHale...Eastern Kentucky and Craig Snow...NM Highlands University.

Top to bottom I think UNM has the best talent in the league.  High major level talent.  But there is only one basketball to be played with and that Weir guy is one odd duck.  Ive got them somewhere 51-100 in final NET with NIT written all over them.
