Lakers Get AD

Recommended Posts

Anthony Davis is frail just like LeBrick.  They should’ve tried to get Kawhi.

A heavy price to pay, though

For that to happen, several things need to occur.

1)  They cant announce the deal until july 30.  Probably not a problem, since waiting helps the Pels, too.

2) AD would have to renounce his 4 million trade kicker.  Maybe.

3) The Lakers renounce everybody they can.  Again, probably not an issue.

4) Kawhi would have to take slightly less than max, since even with 1 thru 3, the Lakers cant clear enough for a full max deal.  Almost, but not quite.  Probably wont make a difference.  Unless...

5) Kawhi actually would want to play there.  The Clips have room for 2 max slots, Toronto can offer more, and the last couple yrs have shown the Laker mystique, while strong, is not invulnerable anymore.

Its gonna be a fascinating summer.

What's more fascinating is that even though the trade market for Davis was the Lakers and nobody else (Davis' agent took Boston out of play, and the Knicks didnt have the trade assets), and that everybody knew Davis wanted to leave, the Pelicans still managed to get top dollar for him.  Pelinka may be out of his depth.

I think this means Rondo is re-signing and I hope Javale McGee does too.

Not likely.  Clippers is my guess.

New Orleans is about to be one hell of a team. Next year might be rough but two or three years from now they will be a young top team. Good job by New Orleans and therefore good for the NBA.

Lakers looking like the version who got Gary Patton and Karl Malone then never actually won anything.

Payton and Malone were both over the hill when the Lakers got them so you're comparing apples and oranges.

Ball has always been overrated because of his athleticism. He's a terrible shooter for a guard and has trouble staying healthy.

Hart is a great hustler but he's smallish and will never be anything more than a role player.

As such, the Lakers traded one guy with superstar potential, Ingram, who as yet hasn't much shown that potential but otherwise two players who are "just guys" to borrow from a longtime SD sportstalk host.

Regarding the three #1s, the one the Pelicans can use this year is the fourth pick in the draft and therefore of considerable value. However, with LaBron, AD, Kusma and another high talented free agent yet to be signed, the Lakers' #1s in 2020 and 2021 are going to be no better than the 25th pick in the draft and therefore of minimal importance.

Conclusion: Rather than the Payton/Malone acquisitions, this trade is going to be like the one in which the Lakers acquired Kareem Abdul-Jabber who, to quote from his Wiki page, was obtained "from the Bucks for center Elmore Smith, guard Brian Winters, and rookie "blue chippers" Dave Meyers and Junior Bridgeman." If you've never heard of Smith, Winters, Meyers and Bridgeman it's because, like Ball, Hart and Ingram, although at the time of the trade they were young guys with potential, none ever evolved into being anything more than just competent. Ball and Hart are never going to be better than competent and whether Ingram can evolve into a star remains to be seen.

AD isn't the one past his prime trying to chase a ring in this version. What they have in common is that the players they do have, haven't played together, aren't good enough if it all goes perfect, and have a weak supporting class.

Lebron and AD will not make the Lakers a championship squad in the current NBA. It will just barely put them in the top 4 of the West.

They overpaid. Pels made a great deal.

Yep..... good deal for N.O.

FYI in his 7 year pro career A.D. has played  more than 68 games twice!

he's a big dude, something usually breaks.

And LeBron is 34.  He's been durable over his career, but 34 is still 34 and Father Time is undefeated.

The Lakers window to get a championship with LeBron is what, 2 years?

New Orleans took a lesser deal than they were offered this past trading deadline, tho there wasn't the #4 pick involved at the time. The picks have the ability to be pushed back.

But in the NBA,you want the best guy in a trade. The Lakers got the best player in the trade and should have him in his prime for the next 5 years. Now if they can land another superstar. But even before the move, they were a preseason favorite
