And these are supposed to be smart kids from a wealthy suburb who attend a top public school. The punishment should be barred from prom. Not a sit in my office lecture.

I’ll go one better, they should be expelled.

Freedom of speech.  They weren't on campus.  They can say, wear, or carry any damn sign they want to carry.

If it were up to me, I'd leave the kids alone and kick the parents asses.

I know. I’m just appalled that this shit has become so open the last few years. Maybe it’s a good thing, at least we can see them now for who they really are and shun their ignorant asses.

I'm with you. I thought things were getting better with each generation. My parents better are better than my grandparents and so on. I guess there is just deep seeded racism in some blood lines.

I’m against suspension/expulsion as a punishment, but these kids shouldn’t get to do anything extracurricular the rest of the year. No prom, no grad night, no graduation ceremony. And idk if there are black students at this school, but they should be made to listen from their own peer group exactly why racism - even “just jokes” - is so damaging. These kids have a month left before the high school produces them as adults. Sounds like they need to cram.

Did this take place at Covington High School?

We can presume that if it was a homophobic joke or slur, BYU would grant them admission.

What don't I know about this?

From reading the link and comments following the picture, I'm surprised this happened in LA.

I'm surprised this happened in a HS with what sounds to have a significant other non-white demographic - Asian.

I'm surprised that this was done by youth, who I assume have a better acceptance of diversity than does older generations.

Is there a growing acceptance in the younger generation of the use of the N word?

Anyways, I wouldn't flog the children.  There are adults in this culture and environment that are more to blame for these actions.  Teachers at the school, parents in the home, etc. are allowing this culture to exist.  These HSers have younger brothers and sisters that are growing up in this same culture and environment.  This sign is a symptom of something bigger.  Address the problem, not the symptom.

This high school is in a very wealthy area.   Mostly whites and asian.

I think this is two very ignorant kids, doing something stupid.

I wouldn't be surprised if they copied it from social media.

OK, one thing I don't really like is the reaction to it (lady posting on twitter).

Some lady was told about it being on her daughter's Instagram, and her reaction was to take a screen shot, and then repost it on Twitter, and try and draw publicity to it?

I wish she would have simply told the kids it was inappropriate, and asked them to please immediately delete it.   Could have been a teaching moment....for actual kids.  No need to try and destroy some dumb kids' lives over it.

And if they refused to delete it....then I guess it is worth escalating.

Oh Christ. Lighten up Francis

We are talking about a dumbass racial statement by a couple of teenagers and a supposed adult on this board makes a dumbass comment slandering someone’s religion. I’m not going to let that pass, just like the racist statement was not allowed to pass. And you can get phucked too Rudy
