Prop 187 on a mothaf*ckin party!

That's what did it, honestly. Among other things. But that was the dealbreaker there.

The CA GOP gave their middle finger to a constituency who would have at the very least been split between GOP/Dem and who now represent a socially conservative constituency with an entrepreneurial spirit, legit work ethic and general interest in getting along and not wanting to deal with the government. The GOP shit the bed.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

Collective memory is real. I know kids who weren't alive when prop 187 was on the ballot but who know what it is.

Or maybe it's "purpling" because some long time Republicans are getting turned off by the GOP and the religious right platform?

Is that even possible?

The influence of the religious right peaked decades ago.

I think it’s the case of Hispanics becoming the majority race in California which is consistently increasing. Like blacks, most Hispanics vote Democrat.

Just asking for my general edification--do all the politics threads have posts like this? lol.

"The other theory is that Republican support for anti-immigrant ballot initiatives and candidates ruined the GOP brand in the eyes of immigrants, their children, and whites who were turned off by the nativist appeals – driving all of them into the arms of the Democrats who were pro-immigration.  More evidence supports the second theory than the first."

I think there's a lot of truth in the bolded part.

Or could it possibly be many Republicans are moving out of utopia and are being replaced by illegals.

Thats what I see.  California refugees escape to Idaho by the thousands and have been doing that for many years.

With Republicans banished in California, the politics there are going to be even more interesting.  Gavin Newsom is as liberal as they come, but with a powerless Republican delegation, he is forced to be the adult in the room in Sacramento.

Pretty tough to blame California problems on Republicans and Trump, but you know the Democrats will still do it.

Same in Nevada. Unfortunately many that flee end up changing the local culture to be identical to the place they came from

That is what I did....but to Utah.  That is one of the greatest things about this country.  You can easily vote with your feet.

Idaho’s legislature is still primarily composed of rural agricultural interests and that isn’t going to change any time soon. Boise and Ada counties are slowly becoming more purple.
