Sacramento looking strong for MLS franchise/ future MWC bowl site

Recommended Posts

MLS has decided to expand to 30 teams and enter into formal talks with Sacramento for expansion

A part of the proposal is a new soccer specific stadium  that will be built in the rail yards.

Besides being a fantastic home for Republic FC, it’s a huge opportunity for the MWC to place a bowl game in an ideal location which is driveable for many MWC teams, has no other top college football competition and is a major market.

Add to that the opportunity for Fresno and UCD to work together to host a simultaneous student wine making competition among the wine making schools on the west coast:  Fresno State, Oregon State, UC Davis, Cal Poly, Washington State.   This event would be tied to the bowl game where the students would be allowed to serve their wine.   It is a perfect bowl with a MWC/PAC-12 match-up that was lost in Vegas.

Lets hope Thompson doesn’t F this up.

Never mind that a) Sacramento has never been mentioned except here as a bowl possibility, b) the idea that the Pac 12 would play a bowl there is laughable, c) playing a bowl in a 22k stadium screams small-time, and finally d) Las Vegas has already been replaced by a much more attractive site than Sacramento.  The more relevant take is that the MLS announcement puts SD back into play for the last remaining MLS expansion team(Sac and StL are done deals), although currently Phoenix and Detroit are a lot farther along towards snagging that spot.

The new Los Angeles Bowl at Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park
The new LA bowl will feature the Pac-12 against the Mountain West. This is basically the old Las Vegas Bowl matchup with the bowl getting the first selection from the Mountain West against a Pac-12 team. The Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park opens in 2020 and will also host the 2023 College Football Playoff title game. This bowl is huge for the Mountain West, especially after its 19-year tie-in with the Las Vegas Bowl ends after this season.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Sorry, but the LA Bowl isn’t a huge deal for the MW.

Sure it’s nice to get a bowl lined up but playing against the #8 PAC team is terrible.

Rather play a better team from other G5 conferences that are ranked or nearly ranked than a team that always around #50 or worse.

I would agree the size of the stadium is a bit small.   But I think it may be too small for the soccer team also.  They really need  a 30k size stadium.

That being said there are lots of strong reasons to put a bowl in Sacramento.

1) key recruiting ground for Fresno, Nevada, San Jose State, and at one time Boise.  No P5 or G5 presence makes this an open recruiting ground.

2) hard to find a location within less than a 9 hour drive of more schools: Boise, Nevada, San Jose, Fresno, San Diego State, UNLV can all drive to Sac.

3) Railyard location makes it easily accessible by train or plane.   With direct flights from Honolulu, St Lake City and Denver, San Diego, Las Vegas.   Direct rail from Fresno, San Jose, Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver

4) nearby two AF military bases in Beale and Travis.

5) Population is high school football crazy and with no P5 or G5 would like sell out the game.

6) new stadium with great site lines would make for a great game day experience.

San Diego is a very long shot.  Phoenix and Las Vegas are clearly ahead of you.

Didn’t say CA.   At one time Rocklin and Folsom were key feeder schools for Boise.   I don’t know if that is still true so left Sacramento off as a key Boise recruiting ground.   It’s still critical for Fresno, San Jose and Reno all of whom have many grads in the area.

Yeah it’s better to fill the stadium.  Just guess 20K is too small.   Sac is a sports town.   All you need is one team with a local player on it and 5K-10K will be locals with no college tie.   Especially given the current lack of D1A or Pro football in town.

The Pine Cove Bowl.

I'm in.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

Yep. It's not huge but still gets recruited by Boise. DT Chase Hatada is from Rocklin. QB Kaiden Bennett and DE Sam Whitney are from Folsom.

Way more Boise kids from the LA area, but that is probably true for everyone.

Probably true.  But if we're going to be in a bowl games with those conferences, we might as well play a game in Sacramento.

Probably true but living in Sac I can also say the PAC is virtually a non entity here.   So a bowl in the valley would benefit them also.  Not to mention the wine tasting tie in with OSU and WSU.

For those complaining about a potential MW Sacramento tie in.. there is this saying dealing with beggars and choosers and such. We aren’t getting any better offers. I like Sacramento. Think it’s an underrated city.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.
