Can't we all just get along (the libertarians vs socialists edition)

Some people on this board should read this and take it to heart.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

Sure, we share some of the same frustrations with the current government system and societal ills. But the approaches to solve said frustrations couldn't be further apart.

There's nothing that bothers my sister more than when I point out that she's acting exactly like my mother.

Wasn't that the whole point of the article?

As a hybrid libertarian/conservative I guess I'll give a short answer. Sure, anybody can get along. However, that's up to them. But even some of the problems either side recognizes as such differ as well.

Neither my sister or mother wanted to throw me in a gulag.

You think gulags are a uniquely socialist phenomenon?

No. I have made it very clear on other threads that the authoritarian far right loves to gulag too. For instance, the recent drug legalization and prison threads.

This gist of your response wasn't quite clear to me, then.

Authoritarians, whether left or right, love gulaging people. As a libertarian, I’m philosophically opposed to gulaging in order to force social change on victimless offenses.

A whole heap of socialists would say the same thing.

Are you suggesting that I'm a socialist? Or do you think former journalist SJSU and Sacramento Kings fans who live in the Central Valley and like to wear plaid shirts invented re-education camps?

There is no getting along with socialism. It's a failed ideology that only leads to disaster.

So...you're saying we are just the right amount of "socialist" now but you're opposed to going any further?

Where you went to school, what your professions were, what team you follow, or what clothes you wear have nothing to do with ideology. I've seen leftist ranchers and conservative Hispanic immigrants or conservatives wearing skinny Jean's and hemp shoes

I never suggested otherwise. Though it's good to know your rich life experiences have given you such keen insights into the nature of man.
