Nevada Hires Steve Alford!

This year was probably a solid awakening on how tough those runs are...and how magical those seasons really are.

Alford should keep Reno in contention for MWC championships and at-large berths pending on other schools becoming better. (group effort sadly)

This hire is great.

Great for Reno.

Great for the conference.

Really great for the rivalry. UNLV already hates Alford.

I think this offseason so far is playing out nicely for both programs.

Could Nevada and UNLV finally be good in the same sport at the same time? That would be awfully fun, if it happens.

We all should only hope. We don't need to root for each other, but damn it would be something to throw money at.

But those were UNLV insiders.

Our insiders are more like outsiders with a solo cup against the wall hearing Charlie Brown's teacher.

That and twitter nerds selling game of thrones knock offs.

All is well, For Rice is gone.

,Well Alford has shown he can win in the MWC and he still has recruiting connections in SoCal. Probably as good a hire as any out there. He should be able to keep the transfer guys around. I’m not sure where he got the asshole label. Whenever I’ve watched his team on TV he seems to relate to his players well. It could be he just didn’t get along with UCLA boosters who are true assholes.

Anyway, if he is the guy, welcome coach Alford in your return to the MWC. Good to see the MWC schools bringing in some good coaches.

In Alford in the MWC at UNM, he won the MWC 4 of his 6 seasons 2007-2013 with one a 3rd place. Every season was either NIT or NCAA tourney.

He had 3 NCAA appearances, went to round of 32 in two, 64 in one.

He had 3 NIT appearances, went to 2nd round in two, first round in one.

--------------------------

2010 NCAA UNM #3 seed. Beat #14 Montana. Upset by #11 seed Washington in 2nd round.

2012 NCAA UNM #5 seed, Beat #12 Long Beach St.  Lost a nail biter to #4 Louisville. Louisville went to Final 4

2013 NCAA UNM #3 seed, Upset by #14 Harvard

Those are some sweet seeds, just some tough luck.

Preseason Expectations on the rise!  Next year's preseason will be entertaining in the state of Nevada.

Per his contract Amendment 3 section 5.3 signed September 2017:

"University terminates without cause prior to April 30, 2019, the amount of $3,600,000,
paid in substantially equal monthly installments through April 30, 2021."

And Alford would be subject to refund any money if he gets another job until April 30, 2021:

" 5.3.1.   Income from another Source. For sections 5.3.1. through 5.3.111: It is expressly understood by the parties hereto that any payments made to Coach as base salary under the provisions of Section 5.3 shall be reduced by any gross amounts to which Coach shall become entitled from all other sources of income, including University, as and for compensation for the rendition of services by Coach during the period of time in which Coach, pursuant to this Agreement, would have been employed by University if University had not so terminated this Agreement."

So the $3,600,000 is basically free money for doing nothing until April 30, 2021.

Is there a provision where he has to actively seek employment or not take employment at all to keep getting that money?

If he's our new coach and we don't lose the 5-6 core players, we'll have the players to make the tourney and challenge for the MWC title. USU is the favorite no doubt.

5.3.1 is pretty clear to me.  He loses some or all of the buyout if he coaches before April 30th, 2021.
