Who's gone, Who's gone/back MWC basketball 2019-2020+Transfers when announced

  1. Early Look...Who's gone, Who's back MWC basketball 2019-2020

A look at who is supposed to graduate on all MWC teams and their stats/positions on team statistics.  Only rumor of possible early NBA is Querta from Utah State but he is young and will probably stay. CSU's Carvachio will be interesting to watch.  My guess is both test the waters with no agent and then back to their teams.

Let me know of thoughts and additions and I'll update.  Note this does not discuss any redshirts that are already in the system for each team or for transfers who have already declared and would be '5th year immediately eligible.

On paper, Air Force brings the most of its scoring back losing only Sr. Pervis Louder who came off the bench and in MWC averaged 10mpg/2.8ppg.  His minutes were more from extended play in the early going but dwindled to less than 8 mpg down the stretch.  Will not know of freshmen/sophomores returning until start of fall semester.

Strongest team back as compared to how well they did this year is Utah State 'if' big man Querta comes back.  Merill will be a senior.  From a disappointing season SJSU brings all significant players back and If Carvachio comes back then CSU and NM both have cores back with losing only 1 starter each.  Boise State is similar but lose 2 x big men in starter Haney and sometimes starter Wacker. The backcourt comes back at the 1's and 2's.  SDSU and UNLV lose 2 starters each but have their benches back.  And Wyoming, while really only losing 1 player, he is their iron man starting guard James 38.2mpg/22ppg.  Fresno State is hit losing top two scorers in Huggins/Taylor and their combined 37ppg.  Then the big losses waiting to see the '5th year senior transfer starters' to Nevada who loses their #1/2/3/5/6/8 scorers. Will be interesting.

I'd be curious what Nevada has waiting to replace all those seniors. @thelawlorfaithful @cardrater @mugtang. I don't know enough about their roster to opine. I'm pretty excited that the Aggies bring back almost everybody including their two (by far) best players.

I'll take that bet, but instead of your life, I'll make it for $10,000.

I think it’s all up in the air at this point and is dependent on Muss and what he does. Jazz Johnson will be back. Brown will be here too unless he transfers.  We have 3 transfers sitting out right now but I’ll have to look them up to tell you who they are.

Hopefully Dave Rose is secretly recruiting some of USU's players.

I know in prior years, Dave Rose would heavily recruit at the MTC (per @jackmormon ).

Jalen Harris will likely be the go-to guy next year, and don't forget that Lyndsay Drew will be back. Shamiel Stevenson is a mid-year guy and Eric Parrish is a decent-looking Juco kid. I suspect we'll be hitting the grad transfer market hard if Muss is still here.

Edit: Oh, and KJ Hymes should be ready to go.

What 4-year recruits is Muss developing, if any? I know he likes the transfers but you still need that talent pipeline developing.

Freshmen? We don't need no stinkin' freshmen!

Jordan Brown and KJ Hymes. That be it.

Nisre will be gone (Transfer)

I doubt Drew will be ready to truly be effective. More of a bench role player.

Jazz could be an explosive player averaging over 20 a game.

Parrish and Harris could be all MW players. Harris will compete for player of the year. Book it. Parrish can play 1-4.

Brown could blossom but my bet is Muss reels in another big grad transfer for the meat and potatoes stats.

Walker I thought was a lock but it seems he may be heading a different route. If Pitino is hired my money is he heads to UNLV.

If Muss stays, I do think he will haul in a great , Transfer, Freshman class. He is after a few freshman and the transfer list grows every year.

Lobos have 2 notable transfers coming in. Zane Martin who averaged 20 points a game at Towson last year, and JJ Caldwell who was a top 100 recruit who went to Texas A&M but was kicked out after an arrest for weed possession. Both should really beef up The Lobos at  the guard position.

EDIT: I also forgot Vante Hendrix, there's actually zero confirmation that he's actually on the team, but he left Utah, committed to Fresno, backed out of that commitment, visited UNM and is now enrolled as a student. He would lose a year of eligibility if he left UNM

What's key for Weir is retaining Drinnon and Lyle. Lyle is arguably the most talented player on this team, and there's a real chance that he'll never play a minute for us which would be a bummer. He is going to graduate this year and would be eligible for a grad transfer if he elected to do so. Drinnon was a guy who  a few weeks ago I would have bet money on leaving, but he did get a lot of minutes in Vegas, and was a fantastic ball distributor. He could get a ton of minutes if he sticks around next year

Rumor has it that Jalen Harris, the sit-out transfer from LaTech, is the most athletic player and best outside shooter on the team right now.  For me, that's both hard to believe and even imagine, but I guess we'll see.

This sounds like your usual speculation.  I remember Weir saying that if there was a silver lining in Lyle getting hurt, it was that he would be able to graduate by coming back next year.  Lyle's plan, according to Weir,  was to perhaps go professional after this season if he had a good year.  Weir said that if that would have happened he would  have left school before he had the hours to graduate.  Weir said all of this in one of his preseason press conferences if you want to look for it.

You also failed to mention Vonte (sp) Hendrix as a notable transfer.  He is enrolled and taking online classes at UNM as of now.

I hope you're correct, but I don't really put a lot of stock into what coaches say about postseason transfers, especially when those comments came in the preseason. There's always guys who leave, and that problem could get worse after what was a bit of trainwreck season.

I did forget Vonte, he's still not officially on the team so he slipped my mind, but I'm sure he's a near lock to play for us next year.

I'm not trying to sound like a pessimist, but I do think Weir needs to spend a ton of time recruiting his own players in the coming weeks

Haney and Wacker graduate, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rice let’s several more go most notably the two Juco disappointments. Alston, Jessup, Dickenson, and Hobbs all return. We recruited a PG RJ Dennis that was one of the better players in Chicago. We have the two athletic transfers. The Oregon kid will be eligible mid Dec. Akot the UA transfer is applying for immediate eligibility based on possible sanctions on Arizona. He looks like the best athlete we have ever had including Hutchison IMO.

The post will be manned by redshirt Jorch and freshman Frazier who is a very good shooter. However, both posts are slow afoot and will be problems on defense. We will have a lot more depth with redshirt freshman Frazier, Abercrombie, and Rice becoming eligible. As noted we will likely add a couple of more players if Rice runs the Jucos.

Our team will be better with a lot more depth. How much better depends on how Dennis, Frazier, and the Oregon transfer perform. And having better luck in close games. If Akot becomes eligible we will challenge for the top spot.

You missed Deion James for CSU.  A legit forward who was out this year.  He is a senior, but understand has one more year of eligibility.  May do the grad transfer route.  I hope not.  Another big underneath would have been huge for CSU this year.
